searching for affordable retirement

Anyone looking for affordable retirement might want to look beyond the many countries in Central and parts of South America to do that. Anybody that has watched the trend in these countries can clearly see the rise in cost of living in those countries because of the influx of expats moving there. Wherever expats move to, the price goes up. It's pretty much a no brainer. There's a reason why so many expats regret their decision and move back to the states or end up stuck with no way out. Nicaragua and Panama will eventually cost as much as Costa Rica. Guatamala might be an option. Belize maybe. Chile is a little expensive but has a stable economy and is politically solid. Parts of Europe like Portugal or Spain might be less expensive than CA, and their crime rate is much lower than Central or South America. Their infrastructure and health care is solid. True, it's farther from the States, but if you are looking for a better quality of life that cost less than what you are paying for, these are good options. Personally, I'm looking at the Azores. Something like four hours from Boston and two hours from Lisbon. Quick access to the States for medical care, and trips to Europe. The crime rate there is almost nil. Cost of living is low cause few people know about it. Worth looking into.

Try Kingman AZ. Third world living where they speak English!

Good, got that off my chest.

Nic. is no bargain, it is close to the US, has generally poor infrastructure, a dangerous political history, and is prone to natural disasters. Pay your nickle and take your choice.

Can you live cheap here? 50/50 when you factor in quality.

Do expats drive up prices? In certain local areas, just like the hippy/yuppy/ rich retirees in the US. In Nic. this pretty much means San Juan and Granada. In the places that have jobs, education, medical care for Nicas, the Nic middle and upper classes are driving up prices, just like anywhere else in the world.

Move to the Appalachia of Nic., norcentro, or move to the ghetto/indian reservation of Nic. la costa atlantica, and you can live as cheap as you can manage. Only remittances and money laundering are driving up prices.

In any case, cheap does not mean free, and your income of savings very much determine your opportunities for happiness.

If somebody was bored and broke at home, they may not make a miraculous transformation here. I think the real magic this type of expat will find is the amount of , time, money and effort it takes to get the quality of live here that they could have in 30 days in a mid-range trailer park in AZ or FL.
