We just visited Nicaragua for one month and planning to move next summer applying with a Rentista Residency visa. I have an internet oriented business in Canada and intend to continue my business overseas in Nicaragua. How is the internet connections in Matagalpa NorthEast region (Santa Emilia) ? Cost, speed and reliability of signal. Can I get a landline connection with router and wifi ? or should I get a data plan on my mobile phone and use this mobile phone as a bluetooth router for my computer ? Are there unlimited data plans because I use a lot of datas ...

Matagalpa has a facebook page, I would ask there. Many people work on line in Nicaragua so you should find like minded folks.

I work on line too.

Here it is in a nutshell: If you are in a major urban area you can get a cable internet from Claro which is unlimited.

Otherwise,, Claro and MoviStar piggyback internet over their phone signals,, but charge for the data. It gets expensive.

IBW is another option if you can't get either signal. They are unlimited,, but the service is "shared", and the speed will slow to a crawl. Lousy customer service,, like like rugs,, but if that is your only option???
I had them for a short,, miserable, time

MoviStar only requires a passport to sign up,, Claro still insists on a cedula so you need a straw man to initiate service.

Unless you are REALLY in the boonies,, you will find internet. Won't be like home,, NIcaragua is woefully under served in terms of bandwidth.

Here on Ometepe there is a company out of Managua, Cootel, who is promising fiber optic distribution from their antennas. The price is roughly half that of Claro, 4mb/$39 and cellular internet 1gb/$2, but as of now they wait for the antennas to go up. Fiber optic is in San Juan del Sur but I hear reports of $200 for 5mb. Ouch!
