Hi, I am coming down next month and will be bringing a couple of tablets and a smartphone that I will be donating to nica ministers to better assist them with their ministry work. Will there be any entry hassles? Thanks in advance for any helpful information !

More than 1 of anything in baggage (if flagged) will cause some problems. Donating this stuff is outside the customs guidelines so they would assess duty if found...so that will be your invoice of they will look it up...duty will be 20 to 50 %.

If a "couple" means 2 you should have no problem as they won't be noticed. Put them in different suitcases and play dumb. If you get assessed, pay up and get on with it.
People who have the money and visas to travel bring back a ton of gifts for family members, usually removing the original packing so it doesn't look like merchandise.

I believe travelers have the right to bring up to $500 worth of "gifts". I am bringing my husband a saw-sal. I took it out of the box and wrapped it in a big towel. The extra blades are in another suitcase. I'll let our forum know if I have any problems. Buen viaje!

Egrande's got it right.. I do it all the time. out of original pack, label some as gifts as such and *divide things up. Customs does not tally well, (that would be multi-tasking, not a Nica strong suit) one case at a time and often don't open but one or two of mine. I carry my laptop and phone in my carryon. all else in suitcases. Never had a problem in 12 yrs with items. If you look like you belong, here, no problem, if you look like your up to something chances you are.

I have a letter from a Bishop here to donate things to schools. Mainly it has been solar powered scientific computers. I have given tablets away before in three other countries. Within a week the children would be bullied and robbed of them. Much of that is avoided by keeping the devices in school for them to use there. Even at home few will have Internet access. Great seeing that Nicaragua is increasingly offering free wifi from schools and parks. Though often have site restrictions.
