Yellow Fever Vaccination

New Topic Newest First

I had planned a trip to Panama over a month ago. But had the warning a Yellow Fever Vaccination was required for entry. And on return from Panama Nicaragua also required the same after returning. But the Vaccinations here were only available to Citizens and permanent residents. I searched further and could get the vaccination from a private doctor for $140, but no official government proof as required. So, I went to Costa Rica instead. At the Nicaragua border four people who had been to Panama were removed from the bus. Seems a mountain out of a molehill as something like 38 cases of it reported in the Americas and mostly in Brazil. Oh and Costa Rica in between has no such requirement, and the vaccine available but will take a few days and you have to wait 10 days for it to take effect and travel. Another case of border wars with travelers as the casualties. I add if flying I have found none of these things apply. Just that I don't want to fly to El Salvador from San Jose instead of going straight on to Panama or overflying Nicaragua on the way back. I swear these rules are harder than those for playing cricket.

Cricket has rules?
I never thought I'd be against safeguards for potentially fatal tropic diseases. But side-effects from the yellow fever vaccine are reportedly both common and often severe. A Canadian friend of mine, a current Nicaraguan resident who did 25 years in the Canadian army where he got that vaccine, is now on a visit to Colombia. When word broke about the new Nicaraguan regulation, he flat out refused to get another yellow fever shot, and is instead returning to Canada.

Oh, and the Canadian says the rule applies whether you travel by land or air.

I suspect the new scrutiny is because of the illegal aliens coming up from Brazil. It would be a humongous disaster if they contaminated the Nic. zancudos.

we went to Minsa in mga . If you say you are going to Cd. P and other safe areas, they wave the shot. If you say you are going to the junge, you get the shot.

In my case they said it is standard to wave the shot for those over 60 and gave me a Constancia to that effect.

YF vaccines are now considered good for life. If you had one don't worry. If you lost the yellow tikkee, you may have to go some other route like getting the shot again.

Yup, another govmint program--if you legally reside here, you get the shot if you have need. If not, pay cash.

From what we understood from Minsa, my wife will need the shot to go to Colombia, but if she wusses out we will just go to Chile.
25% get minor pain symptoms, a couple dozen per million get hospitalized or dead from the shot.

I have had the shot twice and my husband once, no side effects.

I find it a bit incredulous that every Nica coming and going suddenly has had to have a vacuna a week or so before, and every tourist arriving that doesn't even know there is a vacuna for this is turned away and put bac on the plane. Seems a bit unenforcable and bogus to me.

Real easy to enforce, no tickie, no shirtie.

Nic has a right to protect its people from foreign diseases, especially deadly ones. In addition to killing a bunch of people, a YF epidemic would set Nic's economy back by decades.

Airlines carry the warnings and have references to the web sites. . It's new, and an eye opener, but don't expect it to go away.

I agree that Nicaragua has every right to inspect and protect itour ation. I remeber about ten years ago some crazy disease was going around and at MGA I had to stand in a body-mystery- ray machine. Kinda fun. But Yellow fever is rare, coutry specific, isolated and seems an overreaction. Inspection from countries specfic is reasonable, but world wide non access seems a bit of overkill for an isolated disease.
I guess when I see my doctor this next time I might as well get a shot or is it ony free at a public clinic (who probably won't have it)?

Does this also apply to Amercians coming to Nica for a visit from the USA, who have been nowhere else.
Thank you kindly.

As this post line had me confused I went back to the American Embassy communique to residents. Here it is: [email protected] Jan 24 at 2:38 PM
Message body
On January 17, 2017 the Government of Nicaragua announced a new requirement for travelers entering Nicaragua from certain countries to present proof of yellow fever vaccination as a condition for being granted entry to Nicaragua. This requirement is in response to a recent yellow fever outbreak in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

Effective January 27, 2017, travelers coming from countries designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as places with the potential for active transmission of yellow fever will be required to present an International Certificate of Vaccination for yellow fever, showing a vaccine given at least 10 days prior, at the Nicaraguan port of entry. Those countries currently include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela, and all countries located on the African continent with the exception of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Sao Tome and Principe, and Somalia.

The United States is not listed as a country with the potential for active transmission of yellow fever. The new requirement does not impact travelers already in Nicaragua.

You only have to have the shot if you are coming from risk areas, which are clearly listed on the CDC website. This has been the case for a long time, Nic is just paying more attention now. Individual countries generally accept the rules but are free to change or just plane screw them up, especially as some folks are geographically challenged.

To make it easier, but more confusing, many countries are not completely at risk so shots are not recommended. Example Panama, where east of the canal is a risk area but west of the canal is not.

Eldue, you are just making this more complicated and confusing. Accept the US Embassy posting. and leave it alone.

atz111
  3/16/2017 20:03 EST

I am not sure he is making it more complicated...I do think until you got to the US embassy posting you posted confusing and erroneous info "every nica has to have it" etc.. But some things on (or lacking on that embassy post could be clarified.

You come from USA fine...you come USA via Panama better stay in airport as if not will need the shot.. Europeans often do that before coming here. I realize most come direct but not all. The other thing to know is 6 days between hazard country and Nica is all you need to remove the need for vaccination.

It is not all cut and dried. The embassy site is decent for a start but need to think before engaging mouth (or in this case, the keyboard) as you have left a trail of bad info......

To all those reading this far...the thread will now take a sharp turn away from the subject at hand into a critique of someone saying know what you are talking bout before vomit posts...wanna bet.

Left Nica for Colombia right after the warning was posted. Had to fight to get one in Colombia but got it. They were checking for the proof of vaccination when I got off the plane 18 days later. Glad I had it. They are indeed checking at the airport.

AZT, the lady who asked the question was satisfied and thanked me for the embassy clarification. I was confused with all the hearsay and obscure answers so I sought out and found authority on the issue. Now you get on and even though I, often much alone, support you in most of your postings, you attack and insult me. Your posting now does nothing more than run on with more hypotheticals compounding the confusion. Why? You are just beating a dead horse. You also then challenge forum participants to 'take a sharp turn away from the subject at hand". Oddly what you criticise is exactly what you just did. I challenge you, if you want a romp on the internet with one of your wacko ideas, post one, Let us all come have fun and make fun of you. Can you be creative enough to put your 'intellectual challenging question or statement for discussion ' up front and forum post alone, or are you just a piggy- backing coward coming on in the shadows of a discussion to create an identity as the "Punchinella" of the NIca forum?

atz111
  3/16/2017 22:21 EST

Well I was right...here you are with your mumbo jumbo.....ha ha....Jeez you are truly a nut case. like to hear your own voice spouting nonsense instead of facts.. Your words speak for themselves about what a nitwit you are. I have better things to do than joust with you. You want it...nothing betterb to do I guess...You just ain't worth it. As the old saying goes.....arguing with a man who has lost his reason is like giving medicine to the dead. No medicine for you . Over and out.

johnchip

AZzt, I will be waiting for your original post so we can have a forum discussion of one of your issues, which you obvously have many. Until then, your backdoor cowardice is noted.

Azz, you were dismissed from this yellow fever thread and asked to come up with an original posting to continue your thoughts with us. As you seem not to have the creativity to address the forum on your own or are just to much a coward to step up on your own, out of the shadow of someone else's posting. Might I suggest you post an original question for discussion like: : "What is an Ugly American?" , "What does an expat offer to another country?" , "How does an expat stay sober?"
See you on the forum once you post a discussion on your own as the back door is shut to your nonsense from the shadows.
