I cannot say how accurate the information is but I have been told that Yakuz a, a manufacturer of auto parts and largest employer in the country is going to close production in Leon and move to Indonesia. That would be quite a financial blow. But corporations are always looking for the cheapest labor and lest governmental regulations. To Expats, it will mean we are even more important to the economy. But prices could fall or rise. If the information is correct it will close in August. I'm hoping they are negotiating to stay.

Haha. I can't even find the most basic things. I'm always mentioning I cant find a decent can opener. I've bought at least 4 and two didn't work at all, the other two are selective can types. So I use the opener on my Victoronox Swiss Parachuter knife. Next time to the US I will bring back a couple 200 ct bags of the old US Army can openers known as a PL-1, Tiger Tooth. 200 ct bag costs about $2. So 1 cent apiece. We used to wear them on the chain along with our dog tags.
I have brought back freeze dry camping meals, sodas with a self chilling can. Ice cream in a pouch. Just add water and stir and it chills and sets. Not truly ice cream but tastes the part. I feel like a magician demonstrating these things.
I would import non profit simply to bring things into the 21st Century.

Lots of big empty warehouses from the cotton producing days. Nothing will deplete the nutrients in soil faster than growing cotton. In the US they get around it by feeding anhydrous ammonia into the irrigation water. Afraid this is an area where technology dominates. Egypt and Pima Arizona are the top world cotton. Almost entirely automated. Pilotless tractors on GPS, and even the drainage is done by satellite for the farrows.
I buy a machete and its made in El Salvador. I buy a shovel its made in Guatemals. All the plumbing and electrical on my rented home is made in Costa Rica. I find it very difficult to put money into the economy when so little is actually made here. Even produce in the Supermarket. Mainly from Chile for tree fruits which is understandable. But most vegetables are again from Guatemala. And the supplies and foods used in restaurants again Guatemala.
One question I have long had. Why do they not grow date palms here. They doing Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, and on many Caribbean islands. . But not from Panama to El Salvador and Honduras. Seems that if one type palm grows the others will. Less than 30 years ago the oil palm was introduced here from Africa to solve the cooking oil shortage. Bad option though, not at all healthy.
