My wife is Nicraguan and we hope to retire in Nicragua eventually. She doesn't have many details, but tells me that there is some deal where you buy the land and the government will build you a small house. I guess the idea is to encourage home ownership. Does anyone know anything about this ? Thanks very much !

I know about a program similar to this in Costa Rica. I assume it is the same concept in Nicaragua. You will need to prove very limited income and extremely limited assets.

I know someone who did this in Costa Rica. I assume the concept is similar in Nicaragua. You will need to prove very limited income and almost no assets.

We have seen several government housing projects all over the country., including giving title to squatters. You might or might not like the projects. . You need to be in country, look around and talk to people. If your wife left many years ago, she may be in for a shock (g00d and bad) to see how Nicaragua is today. You need to spend some time here before you even think about moving. Rent for a while to see if you want to move. It is worth the investment. We are seeing many people leave. They lost money and time. They investigated over the internet but found reality very different.

Iguanalover raises truly valid points. Suppose you arrive and just don't like the place? You might think it's like Texas, or worse. For starters, swing through the country and try to stay at hotels staffed by folks with local knowledge. It's not a daunting prospect. You can actually bus straight through, border-to-border, north to south in ~14 hours.

My wife actually goes back often. She still has a lot of family in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Her home town is Corinto, which is a big port on the Pacific. It doesn't change too much...the land that time forgot. Her family members have been through this buy the land/ build the house deal. It just strikes me as strange, a poor country, building houses like that.

The way I understand it, it isn't "The projects"....we would have to buy a lot, in order for the govt to build a house...a lot of our choosing. At least that is how her family did it previously.

I am simply dumbfounded with you and your six months of postings in need to find a 'freebie' here in Nicaragua. Do you really think you can come here as a gringo and get something for free? Where is your respect for this country and its people? Oh, that's right, you post "I am an American and proud of it." Then best, "Yankee Go Home!"

You can get a house on your land but first there must be a government project available. They do not have one every year and, to my knowledge, don;t have one this year or last as I was trying to get one for a needy family here, not for me or another gringo, a needy family. You have no shame if you take a house away from a needy family here.

Instant slums; You really need to come down here and see what passes for housing.
one of these projects blew thru Esteli recently. It blew thru quickly because relatives and friends of city hall got all the houses. How well connected politically is your wife?
also know of one of these houses in the country.side The govmint built him a house and he moved to managua and rented it out.
