Greetings everyone,
Currently living in Australia and planning to move to Nicaragua (this year). Searching for accommodation, (single person). Sincerely appreciate any feedback that would provide any information regarding the matter. Thank you all in advance.
Best regards, Constantinos

Constantinos, Sometimes it helps to turn the question around. If somebody told you they were a single person moving from Nicaragua to Australia and seeking accommodations there, what else would you need to know if you wanted to provide a helpful answer?

Lotta empty hotels, you could probably arrange a long tern deal by the month until you get your ear to the ground for long term housing.
It's a buyer' or renters' market, and prices a very negotiable. Anything you see on the net has a high likelihood of being overpriced or gone by the time you get here.

Do you know how long you can keep your car in Nicaragua? I would be driving from Chiriqui on the border with Costa Rica. I have Panama plates. Also how much is diesel fuel in Nicaragua at the present time?

My understanding is 30 days after initial entry. Then you can request a permit for another 30 days. After another 30 days, you may have to leave the country and return.

Yes, that is correct. 30 days plus a 30 day renewal in Managua. Car does not have to be there,, but driver on title does. The initial permiso is free,, the extension is $30. There is a $50 dollar fine if you miss the deadline date, but they will still give you the extension. You have to buy insurance for $12 month, the fine is $100 if you are caught without it,, and Transito ALWAYS asks now,, hoping for a bribe. I usually buy two or three months,, they asked once when I extended,, and I had to go off and get the insurance before they would extend me.
Costa Rica,, permiso is good for 90 days, insurance costs $40 for 90 days, have to buy 90 days, but you can leave your permiso open and re-use it and the insurance within the 90 days.
Leaving CR is straightforward,, but going into Nicaragua,, I use El Conejo He's easy to find, he wears a shirt that says El Conejo in big letters. He is the only one I trust,, the rest of the tramites are thieves who will lead you astray in the hopes of making an extra buck.
I pay Nestor El Conejo 200 cords and let him handle what he can. You CAN easily do it yourself,, and I do if he's not there.

So if you live near the border with Costa Rica you can go to the border every 30 days?

Go to C Rica every 30 days = yes. ... But they want you to spend 24 hrs in C.R....Or contribute to their pension plan...H2O 212F

The other question is it pretty reasonable to rent a place these days. I mean do you think the protests last April has caused has caused the prices to drop? I wouldn't mind renting a place maybe within an hours drive from the border. It doesn't have to be on the ocean. Maybe on the lake.

volcan357 - I was at Ometepe Island, a few years ago - it was magical and the lovely; people were gracious and so welcoming. It was very unique area. I could recommend checking it out for you. I have photos if you want to see this area.

I am interested in Ometepe island. I am presently trying to sell my property in Panama. My wife is from the Dominican Republic but Panama won't give her a visa so she can't enter the country. Nicaragua doesn't require a visa for Dominicans. Nicaragua is only an 8 or 9 hour drive from my house which is another positive. I could move my stuff little by little to Nicaragua in my Toyota Land Cruiser. I have lived in Panama for 19 years and get along very well with Latinos. I am very fluent. I have no trouble having a conversation with my wife who can only speak Spanish. In fact in the past few years I rarely use English in conversation because hardly anybody I know can speak it. Only when I call my brother in the US or on the internet. Anyway the lake is interesting but I don't know what it would be like to live there. Not much shopping close by I imagine.

volcan367 - It is somewhat remote but is a tourist island, foreign and Nicaraguan visitors - I was there only a few days - I noticed food was transported daily. It was a few years ago, not sure what is happened since but the island seemed to have it it's own autonomy - ranchers, farmers - seemed to be there.
