I'm told that most of the real estate sites in the States are priced higher for Gringos. Should I expect to find lower pricing once I get hooked up down there with an agent? I'm planning on a year down there, or multiple month long trips, before I move.

Look around, get to know the pricing and remember all contracts are offer and acceptance……….both are free to act…...

Always a good question...
It's not "gringo pricing" so much as pricing for the more the sophiticated (ie computer using) market -- if you can find a proice on the computer, you own a computer and therefore you have more disposable income.
You also probably beleive everything you read.
Also keep in minnd people will list their property for pretty much whatever they want -- there is not comparable listing situation to compare to -- unless you have someone you can trust (ah there's the rub) to be honest and knowledgeable about what for example a condo sold for in a for example the same building -- or a similar property in the same area. Or why a property in one place in a town is a better buy than another --or even one end of a road than another.
Bottom line -- come south -- talk to everyone to learn who you can begin to trust -- then spend some more time learning and THEN ...start to shop.

there is definitely gringo pricing...especially done by the real estate agencies..when you find one.. you could try looking in olx.com..select country ecuador and then the region..look for sale by owner...your're gonna get gringo priced.... i had a trick..since im ecuadorian but lived in the states since a baby...,i asked my mom to find out for me..my spanish is not that great...i send her to scout for properties..and get the prices and then i would show up as a companion...it was this way for everything in the beginning..now i blend in better...but still, i have an accent and i get called out on it and asked questions....Find someone to trust....one thing i lost in Ecuador is trust...you have to be very careful...if i were you i would say ,..that i was looking for a home for someone else..a sister or brother.....and that you are just the person in charge of scouting...i did that too...to get a feel of the person , situation i was dealing with ..if i didnt like them, i would move on...i still operate in this way....it keeps me safe..could be a tad paranoid too..lol!
