Moving down around the end of the summer. Is there any particular part of the city that we should look at as far as rentals and an area that has a decent congregation of expats. We'll be looking for a small house or apartment that has two bedrooms and two baths. 02 BeTraveling

Welcome to Cuenca. I remember wondering before I came what parts of town were better. After being here 3 years I think all parts of the city are fine. You can be in the center or up a valley. With bus fare a quarter to cross town or a taxi $2, its easy to get around. And, gringos live in every part of Cuenca. There isn't really a gringo barrio.
Best way to find a place is on foot. Signs in windows, word of mouth...great deals available that way. Craigslist and the classifieds not best deals.

Take your time...be patient. MOST people move 2 or 3 times in the first year as they find better places. Rent a small place month to month and then relax and explore. Walk around and talk to others is by far the best way to find what you want. As you explore your taste/desire will evolve.

Great advice. It takes time to find the city, the part of the city and the apartment/house you love. We spent 3 months finding the city and over a year finding the part of the city and the apartment. And thanks to serendipity, the apartment we fell in love with and was our final rental was offered for sale after a year and we were able to purchase it. So, it truly is our final home.

Why would you move to Ecuador to be with the gringos? Open yourselves to meeting and befriending the Ecuadorians.

GringoinQuito....Get a life.I have Ecuardorian friends already. One of the prime reasons I'm moving.Don't lecture me about immersing myself in the local culture.Have lived in several other countries previously so I think I'm probably already ahead of you.Don't respond to peoples queries unless you have something constructive to say.

OK ' I have lived in Panama, Uruguay , Morocco, Austria, Ecuador. I have always tried to avoid Gringolandias. If I wanted to just associate with Gringos I would have stayed in the states. By the way, I have a great life!

Never said in my original question that I wanted to just associate with gringos. If you're going to spend your time on the computer maybe it would serve you best if you gave people some constructive suggestions instead of being so judgmental and apparently drawing your own conclusions. If you have such a wonderful life get off the forum where you seem to spend a far amount of your time, get outdoors and mingle with the indigenous.Just some of your own advise.

Actually I am a full time volunteer with CENIT ( Centro de La Niña Trajabadora) in the south of Quito. I spend all day working with poor and exploited children and their families.
