If my company allows it, I would like to spend a year living in Cuenca and working for my US based company remotely.
Which visa would I get? Is there any way to avoid the 'return to your home country every three months' thing??

You could do it for 9 months by having an extended tourist visa for 6 months which you apply for at the nearest Ecuador COnsulate in your home country and then a regular entrance visa for 90 days more. by crossing the border and returning.
Overstaying either visa however will block you from then requesting another visa including a residency visa should you decide to remain in Ecuador after that time.
Or you will need to apply for a resident visa which allows you to remain for a over that time.

Thanks so much for the info. Seems odd that I can't just tell them "I'm going to be here a year and I'll pay whatever it takes", but there you go.

The gringo way of doing things is different. Here in Ecuador I believe they are still in the mode of, delay things so work can be provided for employees in the various bureaucratic empires.
This is changing slowly but finding work in your department or office for a new son-in-law might be universal
Such might even happen at the highest level of the USA government. I didn't want a comic farce but since one is assembling on stage I guess I might as well watch watch. Government as entertainment is fully up to speed.
nepotism, cronyism, and another I've forgotten.

The other method is to simply apply for a residency visa.
If you have a college/university degree or higher that is probably your best choice as it is least epensive to apply.
Then you can remain in Ecuador for however long you wish to remain.
There is a cost for the application and accompanying costs to prepare translations of your transcripts and they must have the signature of the registrar notarized and must then be presented to the state´s attorney for that instutions local for Apostille, a sort of super notarization for international use) for application to the Education ministry to have your credentials accepted by that ministry which is referred to as SENECYST. ANd you will also have to provide background checks from your state police and the FBI, also again notarized and APostilled, with the FBI check apostilled at the US Sectry of State level.
With these documents prepared with the apostille for translation here in Ecuador, which is preferred as they will need to be affirmed acceptable by the equivalent of a clerk of courts here under oath (that person is refered to as a Notario, not to be confused with a US State Notary Public, different animal entirely) you could feasibly arrive on the normal 90 day visa and prepare your documents with the assistance of a good facilitator for residency.
Once filed for your residency application your time in Ecuador is no longer "tolling" until the answer to your visa is declared. ANd unless you have an unusual problem with your paperwork, the answer is normally affirmative.
Once again, I do reccomend Dana for these services, and just so you know, I get no remittance, kick back or remuneration for recommending her.
Hope that helps!
Susan
