Hello,
I am thinking of moving to Cuenca. I live on a fixed income and am looking for an apartment in a quiet area for three months - $250 to $350 range. Small studio is fine. Thank you.

I was three years in Cuenca. I am in Vilcabamba now. At the end of my time in Cuenca I had an apartment on Hermano Miguel near the Escalinata and Wind Horse Cafe. I paid only $140 a month. I furnished it with found objects.

You should consider (for the money you are willing to pay) an hotel. Negotiate a long term rate. Or rent an unfurnished place and outfit it with plastic table and chairs and a mattress. Then you might find something under $200. I had a nice place for $140. Kitchen, bath, terrace, view.

Stay at a hotel/hostel while you hunt for a longer term situation. It is a renter's market. Don't let expectations color what you see - its not the states. Bargains are available.

Here in Vilcabamba I have a nice house for $200 +$20 for all utilities. I also have clean air. That is worth something.

If you only stay in Cuenca three months you should be ok with the diesel exhaust and altitude.

good luck

Yes, come on down. Vilcabamba is a small town and after a while it feels like one. You get to know a lot of people living here a couple of years.

And, like a constantly refreshed pool of water a stream of tourists and new migrants keeps things from getting stale. People from everywhere in the world, no exaggeration. Indian Kiwi's and Canadian Germans and Brits.

Major geography lesson.

Lots of young people resident and passing thru....not just the old farts (como yo).

The climate is OK. I'd like to say fantastic but even the White House spokes person, if here, would admit its been overcast and wet for months.

Nobody in the Ecuadorian countryside doubts climate change - its been dramatic and obvious. But in Maine its cold and that's my reference standard for weather. After a while I've come to regard 68F as chilly.

You could get your process started in Cuenca and live down here as it progressed. The shuttle and bus can take you up when need be. The trip isn't fun but we adapt as need arises. Adaptability is an absolute necessity.

Clean air, healthy food, Aliens (disguised of course).

you should definitely check for the new rules for tourist temp residency and permanent residency.. things are changing.. and permanent residency is now farther away not closer. dana cameron.. on fb is a really honest affordable choice.. thesagemind@gmail.com for further info

Is the drinking water good like Cuenca where you're at?

vistorsb,
Villca seems like a nice destination. Pretty little town and is much different than the town I always held in my mind's eye. Kind of reminds me of the mind set of some spots in Costa Rica, sin the beach.

I use bottled water. I got bugs two years back. Got better. But I'm just erring on the cautious side vs over reacting.

As for the town and valley....incredibly beautiful. For a landscape painter something of a fantasy, so green, the hills so close and rugged.

This morning I rode the bike ten KM down the Cocanama road thru a series of valleys on the other side of Mandango from Vilcabamba. Amazing scenes now tempered with lots of landslides from all the rain. Big rocks in the road have them choked down to one lane in many places.

I visited a friend who lost power for several days when his electric pole got washed away and the road blocked with rocks and dirt.
