Moving to Croatia

Hi folks. Hoping for some advice and the answers to some questions. I'm looking to move abroad and Croatia is one of the places I'm considering. I do have a couple of hurdles however. To begin with, I'm on social security disability. I receive only $885 a month. Am I going to be able to survive comfortably there on that? For me, comfortable means internet and air conditioning (if air is necessary). Also, I'm a felon and a registered sex offender in the US. Is that going to be an issue as far as residency is concerned? Before I get any snarky comments, I met a young lady in a bar nearly 20 years ago who turned out to be underage. I'm not a rapist or a child molester. Those two issues are also the reasons I want to leave the US. Any advice or answers will be much appreciated.

Hi,

I'll just paste my reply from other forum about moving to Croatia. I hope it might help out.

Short reply is yes you can manage with your budget as many families live off that money. Rent, food and internet should be covered.
Of course it would be hard to get beach apartment but life is possible.

Long reply:

I'll throw in some numbers although it's older post.
I can talk about Rijeka, which is Kvarner bay area. It's 90 minutes from Zagreb, 90 minutes from Ljubljana in Slovenia and about hour from Trieste. Also Venice is about 2 hours ride so you are well covered with airports. During the summer Rijeka is connected with lines to London and Germany so there are ways to reach huge international airports with combination of cheap flights and local transport.

Since maximum salary I've ever had was less than 550$ on that money it's hard to live on your own if you don't own the place

Apartments are usually 300 euro for two bedrooms or bedroom and living room combination.
I would advice getting one without central heating system and you should avoid ones with hot water systems. Heating and hot water is expensive. Heathing used to be good option but prices went through the roof lately.
Currently wood and electricity are cheaper options and having water boiler is pretty much the norm for most of the buildings.

For renting you can use ads and sign contract without any problems. You can write it up and print it and it's valid. If landlord will pay taxes or not, it's not your problem. 10% of landlords are registering with IRS and I'm sure 99% of them are registering only small amount of rent.
So it's one real contract for yours and landlords obligations and rights, and one fake with small amount of rent. But people keep it simple and just write down absurdly low price

Basic health insurance is about 70$ for foreign citizens and you have to pay about 2$ for referral if you need specialist. Also they charge few bucks for specialist checking you.

Internet is going from 30$ and up, depending on speed. Some ISPs have better prices but they aren't always reliable as generally hated T-com.

Piece of bread and 1 liter of milk are on average 1.5$ but can be cheaper in supermarkets.

Gas seem to be close to the ones in the States but you pay for gallon what we pay for liter. (edit: now I see it has changed)
1 liter is slightly less than 2$

Rijeka has advantage with positioning cos you can travel around and within an hour drive you can see totally different nature and also you have plenty of beaches. First one being 10-15 minutes of walking from main city street.

Learning the language isn't necessary as most of the people speak English, or at least can communicate. My American friend is doing fine on his own here. It's easy to learn Hello, Goodbye and Thank you. That should be enough and people will immediately like you

Since you say that your business isn't dependant on your location, registering branch here is not necessary and it will only cost you much more without any benefits for health insurance. It's a hassle you don't need.

I hope this will be of help for everyone contemplating about coming here. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
