Hello to any and every expat.. My husband and I and our two dogs are moving to Dominica by the end of the year and I was wondering if there are any places in particular to find English or American expats? Any advice on local hang outs would be great.

I have been living in Sosua for 10 months now... Lot of expats here & west - check out the "Spanky Bar" - cool place & we're practically family - plenty of good advice from people that have been here a looong time... I'm from N. Cal, most in this place are Canadian, & there are a handful of Brit bars here... Cabarete is more 'tame' w/ a great community also... "Have fun"!!!

My advice to you is not to move there, and if you already have, get out quick. I've done a little survey, and found that foreigners living there more than ten years usually stay, those of five years and less are very dissatisfied and want to leave.
The reasons? Corrupt government, corrupt court system, corrupt police. Almost everyone seems to be hooked on marijuana or coke, the roads and facilities are terrible. Doing business is a nightmare: the people are born misers. If you get sick, God help you.
This is not the Dominica of the 70s and 80s; this is a modern ghetto state with a lot of crime that is concealed from the world.
I know, I lived there for years,

This is a gross exaggeration. Most Dominicans are friendly, naiive and unassuming. Like every other society there is crime and drug use among a very small fraction of the society. Dominica is a nature lover's paradise. With lots of water and fertile land, this island is a dream.

God help us! i am planning on moving to dominica from UK in october this year. its so sad that expats live in dominica in their own little ghettos. canadians in one place, brits in another. One of the things i hate most about england is that this so called multicultural society is a myth. People do not integrate in reality, we as humans do not want to accept other people and cultures. thats why you can go to spain and find all the british pubs serving beer and fish and chips. people go on holiday but would never eat the foreign muck. my parents are dominicans by the way and i born in the uk and have never lived anywhere else but i would love to mix with brits and dominicans alike. relationships are so supercifial it makes me sad : (

I am in England and I want to move to Dominica but only during the English winters. Will be there in 2014 and can't wait.
My parents are from Dominica and I have lived my whole life in the UK but have traveled aboard and enjoy mixing with others.
It is a natural human reaction to want to be with people who are the same as you because it helps you feel as if you belong. If you have just moved to a new country belonging is important. It is just a shame when that is all you ever do and never mix.

The roads are terrible I will give you that one. Healthcare I don't know enough about but I believe private healthcare is possible. Unlike England you can't rely on free hospital treatments.
Outside of that you don't paint a fair picture. As for most people being 'hooked' I have no idea who you hung around with but you will find the same issues exist in England and most other countries.
I hung round with business owners, people with cars and money. Entrepreneurs with a good education enjoying a great lifestyle. Maybe that was why my experience in 2010 was so very different to yours.
But then that's life.

I would love to stay in touch with this conversation myself. I am arranging short visits of a few months at a time rather than moving there completely.
I have a friend who started a new blog and I am going to help her gather information for people moving from England to Dominica. She too will be staying in Dominica for 5-6 months in a year but she is not ready for a few years. Just organised enough to start thinking about it now.

It is only a few days old (started 1 March 2013) but it will grow as we find out more.

Zyanne is right. It's only natural for people to want to be with others like themselves. Multiculturalism is a politician's pipe dream, the politician typically never going near it himself -- oh no, it's others he wants to force it on. It's also the best way to destroy cohesion in a society and one of the reasons the US is such a great place to escape from anymore.

PS I appreciate all the genuinely useful input here. I have a friend who's a guru on Dominica life and swears it's the best place to be.
I too have wondered about the hurricane factor, but it appears Dominica gets less trouble than many Caribbean locations in this regard. Panama seems to be mostly exempt too.

You can definitely rent a place for USD200/Mo here but it will be at least 30 mins away from the capital of Roseau. If it is closer, it will be small and unfurnished. A comfortable size unfurnished apt near the capital is USD250/Mo and furnished is at least USD550/Mo. A furnished place can be rented for USD250 further from the capital.
I hope this is helpful and clear. Feel free to seek clarification.

My wife and I have owned a home above Castle Comfort for about nine years. We are only part time but love Dominica. Now that I have just retired -- yesterday-- we hope to spend more time there. It is it's own culture and one must be willing, as with any place, to adjust to a different way of life. Things are just done differently. At first some of the little things will drive you nuts. And then you figure out the big things too. But that is part of the idea -- learn to shake off your own cultural blinders and assumptions. Like if you go to a hardware store to buy something. Things are done by hand and three different pieces of paper must be hand stamped. Twice. Then you think of Home Depot and wonder why this all takes so long. Eventually, you stop thinking of Home Depot and adjust. Or decide you want to plan dinner. Good luck. You do not go out with a shopping list. You go out, figure out what's available, and then decide what to make. You may have to go to three different markets. The first year you will be totally frustrated. You finally figure it out and go with it. And when you start making that shift, you begin to become a different person. And that is when you begin to see the world in a different way. One person replied that people don't stay. They're the ones who can't stop trying to force Dominica (or any place) to be like the way things are back home. You must honor the new culture. And if you do, you will be richer for it.

Wow, that is not the Dominica I know. Sure you have the right country? You must have been hanging out with the wrong people.

We've been in Dominica part-time for nine years and have a wide mix of friends of all sorts. It has been a great experience.

Someone said they have to go to three markets to plan dinner...really? Wow, that's new to me. I've been here in Dominica going on three years and I don't have that problem because I eat from nature which is in abundance here. We rarely go to the market but when we do, everything is there. We either grow food in our remote garden or people in the community are selling things like cacao, coconut oil, yams, sweet potato, rabbit meat, eggs, organic chickens, etc. We didn't move to Dominica to eat processed foods. I often wonder why in the world Dominica is importing all this fake foods from America, etc. It disgusts me. Dominica is a self sufficient country that does not even realize it yet because the government seems to be in bed with China (the same entities that are running the US government). That's a problem. Besides that, it's one of the best places to live in the world and it's the last unspoiled place in the Caribbean. However, the US is trying to spoil that. I am an American Citizen that no longer believes in the American dream. It's a lie! I speak from experience. America plans to have more influence in Dominica by placing a US Embassy here. They can keep their sick influence!!! Rome will fall. I have to tell BARAK OBAMA that in person. Oh I forgot...I have to talk to his clone because that is what it is....

Indeed. The crap being imported is becoming a serious problem. After the Japan car attack there is now the China car AND plastic attack.
