Greetings!
Let me introduce us, my name is Arthur and we are travelling to Dominica with my beautiful wife and little brother this March.
We plan to spend time from 6 months to one year on the island. Preparation time is going fast and we are bit struggling with the decision where exactly to settle down ...
We are backpacker type of persons, mostly coming to the island to enjoy nature, fishing and peace of mind! The best area for us would be in not too crowded area but at the same time it would help to have a little bit "bigger" settlement not TOO far ... I mean like 30 mins or so ?
Could You please recommend Your favourite areas of living in Dominica ? Considering what I mentioned above, where would You think we should settle ?
Second question is about renting a place there :) I got one email from this forum about helping with rentals in Dominica but that person has not replied jet! Do You know anyone who would want to help us out ? Our budget is not too big but from what I have read I think it is enough for a private place that qualifies for what we are looking for. If someone who could help reads this post, please reply ASAP! Your help will be highly appreciated!
Thank You ahead!
Arthur

I would definitely go to the northeast of the island. Marigot Wesley or even better Calibishie. You are 40 minutes drive from Portsmouth which is the second biggest town in the island after Roseau and it also has Ross University and a lot of "westerly" vibe with restaurants and bars similiar to some of the states.
Calibishie has great beaches nearby and the green is all around when you are on the east part of the island.
Hope it helps!!

Hi,
Calibishie looks beautiful! We have actually thought about Calibishie so ... strong candidate!
How about the rental prices there ? I am bit worried that as this is the most "beachy" area, rent would cost a lot?
Thank You for such a quick response! Hope more people will follow ;)
If anyone would share a local contact for finding a place to stay, it would be appreciated out of this world!

Did you look at the rentals on Dominica's web site? Www.dominica.dm
There is a "where to stay" link that has a lot of rental information. And there are plenty of local realtors who can help you out, probably also linked from that web site.

Have you considered the possibility of arriving to Dominica and staying maybe the first week in a hotel? That will give you plenty of time to meet locals and Im sure this way you will be able to get the best rental prices. Renting from abroad is always expensive and Dominica is a friendly friendly place. If a budget rental is your thing, maybe this is the best way to go. If you dont feel sure about this, then webpages like the one above are the place to go! Keep us posted!!

Greetings!
Thank You for the ideas and feedback!
I totally agree with looking for rentals from internet v. locally! We actually started looking for cheap stays for short term first so we can start the real search while beeing on the island!
Few more questions ...
Has anyone had trouble on border with the "ticket out" ? As I understand, by the book You have to have a ticket out from Dominica when entering the country ... how strict is that rule, any real experiences ?
Does local transportation, more specifically buses, give You trouble when trying to enter with large backpacks and maybe even a few smaller ones ? I read from somewhere that they do not want to take regular luggage on board? Me and my wife will have quite large hiking backpacks, I wonder if we can get around the island without trouble using local transportation or do we have to start rearranging our plan :) ?
Thank You so much!!

Good day Arthur,
Local public transport allows large bags but may require the passenger to pay for the seats taken to make up for the passengers they would have lost.

Also, If you are still in search of an apartment our Real Estate Agency currently has a listing for a 2 bedroom apartment in Woodford Hill, which is near Calibishie (one of your desired locations). The apartment is listed for both short-term and long-term. Therefore if you chose to reside there short-term you can decide whether you are willing to remain long-term or seek accommodation elsewhere.
We also have a 2 bedroom apartment in Dublanc, a small community approximately 7 min. drive from the town of Portsmouth and approximately 45 min. drive from the capital city of Roseau. This apartment is only available for short-term rent at this time.

I am not sure how strictly Immigration officals deal with having a return ticket. However see the following link for other entry requirements to Dominica: http://www.dominica.dm/index.php/entry-requirements
