Hi there,
I am currently back in the UK for a few months, but will be returning to Addis where I was for 6 months.
With regards to walking dogs, there are a few inner city parks, although I have no idea whether dogs are allowed or not. This website is great http://addisgreenspace.org/.
There are mountains all around Addis, and it is easy to get out into the countryside. You can hire a car pretty easily in the city, and then after half an hour you can be in the countryside. There are of course several mountain ranges in Ethiopia also, if you fancied a week away, or a long weekend.
I drove all the way through Ethiopia last year, from Sudan to Kenya, and there are very few roads, which aren't tarred these days. Just beward of animals and children!! Ethiopia is crazily overpopulated, and even countryside villages are chaotic. I had a nasty accident in the South, but it all turned out okay.
Ethiopia is really beautiful, and I particularly enjoy Hawassa, which is only about a 3-4 hour drive from Addis.
ENJOY!!
