After almost two years in Mexico I am ready to make my "original" retirement move: to Eastern Europe. Kosovo seemed un-do-able back then. Now that I know I can live OK on a limited service industry pension, I have questions: Am I reading the blogs correctly, that no visa is required for USA citizens for any length stay in Kosovo? Does anyone have contacts or recommendations for "studio" student type housing? What part of the city would be best to be near a park, a grocery, some night-life and hopefully a gym? (I'm a right downtown kinda person when possible) I'm a writer who likes reading, hiking, and watching soccer and drinking a few beers with buddies. I'm comfortable with all kinds of people; I need nothing "Americanized" or upscale.

I am an American living in Kosova. Here are some answers to your questions.
Currently no visa is required to live here. However, bring a background check with you. In order to get an ID here, you will need to prove you are not wanted in your home country.
Housing is pretty easy to find here, especially if you aren't to picky. It's easiest to find once you are here as you are going to want to physically see any place before you commit. You might be asked to pay the first 3-6 months upfront, but generally there are no deposits. Most apartments come furnished and the tenant is usually responsible for water, sewer, and electricity. It is hard to make contacts with landlords overseas.
Mother Theresa is directly in the middle, but rent tends to be higher there. Anywhere near Slovenjia Sport is also an excellent choice. It is a little cheaper and within a few blocks of anything you need. Stay away from new apartments. New places are quickly and cheaply built to insure maximum profit and there are few building restrictions. Places built in the Yugoslav years tend to hold up better.
