Moving to Malta

Let me begin by saying my knowledge of Malta is very limited. I visited for a week 2 years ago and fell in love with her. I am a single 65 year old single male and I live in Sweden. I am a US and Swedish citzen and I am ready to relocate to somewhere a bit warmer. I am living on a fixed income of $1,700 and would like to rent an apartment for a year to see if I can adjust to life on Malta.

As a citizen of an EU country I guess the move from Sweden to Malta would be fairly easy. I will sell my house and belongings here in Sweden and arrive with a couple of suitcases. One of the things I really like about Malta is the public transport system. I do not want to drive. The best place for me to live would most likely be Valletta, but the cost of an apartment there is expensive. I think my next choice would be the three cities area. Any information you wish to share about this area would be great. I thank you in advance for your time. I would prefer a quiet area, near bus stop and market. I would like access to internet and multichannel TV. Utilities should be included in the rent or a realistic estimate of utilities should be provided. I think there is a hospital near 3 cities. Is that right? If not what is a good area with easy access to a hospital.

I know there are many other areas with access to many buses. Msida, Mdina, Balzan and Birkirkara come to mind. Are there inexpensive apartments in any of these locations. I love to cook and shop at local "farmer's markets", the outdoor type.

I like small neighborhood festivals, the kind with locally made wine and beer, music homemade food and fun. Love to people watch and enjoy a day at the beach now and then.

I will stop here until I get a response or two then try to learn more details about Malta as a place to live. Again I would like to thank you for taking the time to respond. Lee

Hi Lee,
My move to Malta has been delayed, because of my husband's job, so instead of moving this autumn, we are planning to move to Malta in early 2014.
I have not been there at all yet and probably will not get a chance to visit before we move.
We compromised on Malta as our next home, as we both want to live someplace warm & sunny, but my husband is not interested in learning a language. Malta gives us the climate we want, and I can study Maltese and Italian for fun, but he will be able to live & work in English.
Have you moved to Malta yet, or are you still in Sweden? What are your plans? Have you chosen a town?
We are looking primarily at Sliema, Msida and Gzira. Valletta would be nice, but as you noted, it can be a little more expensive, plus it is farther from the places where we would likely work & socialize. We will probably find an affordable B&B to stay at for our first month while we look for an apartment (hopefully, we will arrange jobs in advance...).
We also don't want to buy a car, so we want to live where there are lots of bus routes & where we can walk to shops & tennis courts & swimming areas, and maybe even to work.
Best of luck to you, and thank you for sharing your experiences,
Kate
