Hi Eric.
One of the reasons was St L wasnt listed on the Expat Exchange. Ive got Betsy to atleast get the island listed.
There must be many expats on the island who dont know that this forum exists.

Hi there. Glad you liked St Lucia, a beautiful place.
Jobs are hard to come by , the country is still suffering from recession and you would need a work permit. What kind of work do you do? You would also have to show you can support yourself.

Hi Bobbyvee, I have been following your thread postings on the Belize site for many months now, and I like your no nonsense approach to things. That said, I am forming the opinion that Belize has not really enjoyed expat success in general. It seems that they are not ready for "us" yet?. Anyhow, my focus is shifting somewhat, and I am starting to take a hard look at St Lucia. Let's just see where my research takes me. Would be grateful though, if you could point me in a good research direction, as I am not too big on asking "lazy-assed" questions of people, and expecting them to spend too much time responding, if I can find the info elsewhere myself. For sure though, I will be frequenting the forum and actually hope to one day contribute something myself.
Regards to all.

Hi there. Glad you like my straight from the shoulder approach. I try to tell as is . Leave the rose tinted glasses off. My wife lived on AC for 15 yrs, was a dive instuctor there, but also had a home in Tx . We got fed up with the way AC and politics were shaping things and liked the look of St L so came here last Nov . for a recce , liked what we saw and did a lot of on line searching and chatting to friends who knew the island. So weve let/up for sale our AC beach bungalow and moved here , til next April, then will winter here for the foreseeable future. Feel free to ask any ???'s

Hi Patti. We live in West Columbia, near Lake Jackson. Im a Brit married to an American. We lived on Ambergis Caye, still have the beach bungalow, its let and for sale. For many good reasons we wanted to get out of Belize and visited St L last Nov. and fell in love with the place. It has everything and is cheaper than Belize ,certainly AC . We will buy/build here when were sold on AC. Its mountainous and lush here, very friendly, masses to do and see, great restaurants, many good supermarkets and reasonable priced drink. Our problem is we came here to winter, who in their right mind wants to summer in Tx LOL

Bobby, sorry I'm so slow to reply - work's a bear right now. We're looking at Belize, CR and Panama, but after reading your posts, StL should be added to the list. I've looked at several retirement sites, but can't find good info on StL. Could you recommend one? I hate to bother folks with too many questions till I know more. 98 degrees and raining today. You don't miss it here!

CR is too like USA LOL Panama, you must spk Spanish , Belize is in the doldrums . We did a lot of on line research and talked to friends who had visited. It all seemed to add up. So we booked a wk in St L best decision weve made, locals are amazing and really do spk English ans no chip on shoulder etc etc , its affordable, good meds, great transport to USA, Europe and UK. its on the edge of the hurricane belt , Weve decided to winter here now ,6 to 8 months a yr, we own homes in Tx and UK so travel will we are able , but this time weve booked a lovely villa for a yr. Absolutely no regrets. You need to get the 'bear' off your back LOL

Spanish isn't a problem, studied it for 5 years and pick up languages easily. CR doesn't seem to have the benefits for expats that it used to. Panama's seem good, still looking for some in StL. No chip is great, too much of that other places. Looking for good meds, friendly natives, moderate climate, tax breaks would be a plus. We have the financial requirements for Belize and Panama, guess others are similar. We're scheduling trips in 2015 to follow up on the online research I've been doing. The 'bear' may be closed by year end.

Climate , very friendly locals meds no problem. We pay no taxes, they are done in the states, but im a Brit and pay no tax as i dont reside in UK !!!! We keep any extra monies off shore, everything legal. Unless your taking of very large sums, you shouldnt find any probs here. They just want to know you can keep yourself here, we had a great recommendation from our manager at Wells Fargo , had good monthly statements to show, they hardly looked, said your the kinda people we want here , welcome . But weve decided not to buy . We are renting luxurious villas from the rental we get for our little Ambergris Caye beach bungalow . Looking at a fabulous place on Sat , for next yr . We might miss a yr sometime , go to Australia , or Europe for 6 months , more flexibility.

Sounds like storing what we "must" keep and renting the house would be the best plan. Then pick a country and rent for 6 mos or so. We wouldn't have the issue of selling if we didn't like the location and would have the freedom to come and go. The house here (near Seabrook) would rent easily. Looking forward to checking out a few places next year to see where to start.

As long as you have your base in Hunt, you really could just spend 6 month rentals in different places until you found what you are looking for, We might very well spend a winter in Southern Europe in the future. Also a long trip to Australia , visiting family

Boquete has a large expat community, i joined the local forum and learned a lot. You have to leave Panama after 3? months and return to get your visa renewed. !!! Travel to and from Boquete not the best and you need a vehicle if your there any length of time. Friends live in Cal. married to Americans and have done for over 40 yrs , so yes they love US would not go back

Re: Panama;
My wife and I took a good look at Panama then spent ten days on a recon trip. Boquette is the exception to the fact that Panamanians just don't like North Americans. The rural stores overcharge you just bc they know you have money. Traffic cops on the big roads try to scare ppl into paying them bribes.
Boquette has 20K ppl, 1k are North American. Weather is perpetual springtime, ocean beach is one hour away. Prices are cheap, need to know Spanish.

A quick history lesson on the word Gringo. The word breaks down from the words "grin" and "go".

The word "grin" stems from the meaning of the name Isaac, which means to laugh. This would be Isaac in the bible, Abraham's son, the father of Jacob, who's name was changed to Israel.

The God of Christianity is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Israel's descendants were to be called by Isaac's name (Genesis 21:12 & 48:16).

Thus true Israelites are called by Isaac's name.....Saxon or Isaac's sons. Anglo means messenger, thus white people are called Anglo Saxon or messengers of the sons of Isaac.

The "go" portion of the equation hails from the fact that Israelites were to always be a foot, traveling all over the globe. (Joshua 1:1-4)

So Those who grin and go are called Gringos.

Hi. St L is probably cheaper than Belize. We lived on AC ,still have a beach bungalow there that we rent for 1500usd a month plus our cart for 350/month,this pays for a nice villa overlooking the Caribbean. We spend about 500 USD a WK plus 300usd a month on utilities . we have property in tax and UK. We also have pensions from USA and UK and investments, so not quite the ordinary retiree on a low USA income. These countries aren't cheap anymore, USA is the cheapest place I know, we are about to buy in fla. On the gulf coast lol.

I was set on Belize until I read your take on Belie vs St Lucia As a diver I have traveled to a lot of islands through out Caribbean. There are several things I have to take care of before I can make the move. I am hoping to take a couple of wks to visit Stl Lucia in 15 to make my decision. The island I decide on must have good scuba.

You will be interested to know that one of the biggest and best dive schools in the Caribbean is just opening up in Rodney bay. Its affiliated to the London dive school. You will find this island soooo very different to Belize. Its not 3rd world, has everything you could want and the nicest ,friendliest locals you'll ever meet. We've been here two weeks, have a family of eight. From my calculation, the cost of living is just about 15% higher than our cost of living was in the US. Now, we lived in North Georgia, near Chattanooga TN. where the cost of living was as cheap as anywhere in the US, but it is still high here, but not as high as other place in the Caribbean.

All imported goods is cheapest laptop around 750usd .elec. Very expensive, keep a/c use to minimum, hang washing out to dry. Local produce is very good quality and cheap, local chicken and pork are excellent. Vehicles have a 50to 60% import put on them. Most come from the Japanese car auctions, very good condition, but with freight and taxes ,expensive. But sunshine, sandy beaches, friendly locals are all free. Accommodation is according to location, most good ,furnished property starts at around 1000 ish usd
Nowhere in the Caribbean that's worth living in comes cheap, those days have long gone.

Hi everyone!
My husband and I are considering (seriously) retiring at the end of 2015. We recently visited the Algarve in southern Portugal and fell in love with the country, the people, the food , the wine and of course, the beaches! We came home and immediately started planning on making that our next destination. I really don't have any problems with retiring there, renting for a year or so and exploring the European side of the world, however we have 4 grown children here in the U.S., 3 grandchildren and 2 dogs and honestly, I just don't know if Portugal is 'too far away' for our family to visit and see each other often. My concerns have led me to come up with a plan B, if you will, and see if there's something a little closer that meets our needs. St. Lucia has come up often and after reading the posts available here, I have a few questions that I hope you all would be kind enough to help answer for me. We are very familiar with the Caribbean and have visited many islands over the years. We love getting off the beaten path and exploring as though we lived at a particular place, like taking the buses and shopping and eating where the locals do. We've becer been to St. Lucia though so I wonder:
Are they a dog friendly island? Is it possible to rent a home or villa with some land for our dogs (German shepherds?)
Is it possible to live on a retirement income of about $1500 a month (USD)?
Can we get by without a car? I love to walk and ride bikes and wonder if it's safe to do that in St. Lucia.

We are currently living outside of Atlanta Georgia and I think the flights would be pretty direct or with one stop. We are downsizing our lives now and just want a simpler, slower pace of life but also have things to do like golf, tennis, obviously the water activities and creative opportunities (like painting, pottery, sculpting etc).
Any information you can provide would be so appreciated.
By the way, we've ruled out Panama, Costa Rica and Belize because I'm concerned with having adequate infrastructure in place wherever we go! Thank you!

Hello Charlie Girl,

Great name.

The Great Bobby Veee is the host of this here forum, but he is having a few computer problems, so I'll jump in and tell you what I can about your questions.

We've been here a month. We took an exploratory trip here in November, confirmed everything we saw on line and moved here (a family of 8) in December.

We share three things in common. 1) We too are from Georgia, northwest Georgia, near Chattanooga 2) We too are not rich, so money is always a concern and 3) We too have two dogs that we brought.

There are tons of regulations concerning bringing a pet into St Lucia. Basically, the dogs will have to have all their shots, but there is a list of shots they require here. If you e-mail me I'll send you that list. It's rather hard to obtain via the governmental web site.

joeythompson777@aol.com

You can do all the things you mentioned, but I'm not sure you can do them on 1500 per month. The best place to check concerning housing would be Blue Reef Reality. Google them and if you contact them ask to speak with Donnelly.

Food cost are slightly higher than the US,m probably 15 to 20% higher and if you live in the north (The Rodney Bay area), you can most certainly get around without a car. Anywhere else would be tough.

Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Joey

Hi Charliegirl. Back on line,my good friend Joey did an excellent stand in.
Out of interest, we still have a bungalow on the beach on AC ,Belize.
I used to holiday on the Algarve back in the early 90's and love that place.
I think you would love this place, but the Caribbean isn't cheap. It all depends on your life style. Sounds like you would need to live in Rodney Bay , Grows Islet area, where you can do without transport, problem is its the most popular area on the island. There are some unfurnished apartments under 1000 USD ,but you need room for the dogs. There are small houses fully furnished out of this area ,but still in the north ,above Castries , but you would need a car. You can buy for around 10k USD . I truly think you would struggle on 1500usd / month, I know what we spend .!!!!
I would do as Joey suggested and talk with Donnelly at Blue reef. Mention mine and Joey's names . He's very good . if there is anything out there he will know. Good luck.

Thank you both so much for your informative responses!
I have some reservations about living on an island (specifically me getting rock fever), as my husband is quite content to play golf and hang around the house much more than I am. We like gardening and playing with our dogs (just 4 legged versions of our children) but I'm wondering what I would do with myself on a daily basis in any location we move to. I enjoy volunteering, all art projects, tennis, gardening (as mentioned) and would love to learn how to sail. No, we don't currently own a boat though! Lol!
I'm very impressed with Johnny bringing his entire family of 8 there though, and just knowing how much it cost us to raise and educate our 4 kids here in the States, I must say that I feel like we could survive in St. Lucia with no problem! We eat mostly fish and vegetables although hubby does enjoy a good steak every once in awhile. We don't eat out much, prefer to grow what we eat, but definitely enjoy our wine collection (mainly reds). My question is what's so expensive about living there? I mean, I understand that almost everything is imported into an island (I have a sister living in Kauai and I don't know how she can afford to eat 3 meals a day!), but is it that EVERYTHING just costs more? I did look at blue reef realty and saw some homes in the north Rodney area that rented for $1300 and came with some land separating the houses and thought it wasn't that bad. But maybe I'm missing the costs associated with cooling and running the house. We are not big AC people and prefer to have cool breezes blowing in all day, unless there are bugs/rodents that make that a scary thought! Lol!
As an aside, we stayed in Tortola in a beautiful rented home (without AC) years ago with the kids and all the beds came with these gorgeous nettings and we thought it just looked so tropical until we woke up in the middle of the night to blood curdling screams coming from every room! Needless to say, we are not really big bug people!
Anyway, we are planning a trip to St. Lucia in March and I guess we'll figure a lot of this out then after seeing the island for ourselves. I don't want to sound hesitant, but I'm really trying to find a place that I loved as much as the Algarve but closer to home. I am smart enough to realize that no place is the same as another, but I'm hopeful that this little gem of an island will tick a lot of my boxes! Definitely the people on this forum have helped make this a real possibility! So thank you for your help, and for just reading along!

Hi Charlie, made me smile when you called him a 'Johnny'. Lol.
StL is very fertile, grow anything. Web cook papaya, pawpaw and bread fruit, lots of lovely local fruits. Chicken is cheap, hormone free and plump. Pork is good value too. All steaks are CAB imported from US , no hormones. But costs at least double, but always yummy. Elec. Is high priced. We live in a 3 storey villa overlooking Rodney bay, it doesn't even have a/c fitted. We are high up and the easterly breeze keeps us cool and most flying things away. No nasties live on the island in the inhabited areas, never seen a spider bigger than 1/4" never seen rodents, lots of feral cats , Eating out is expensive, but the many restaurants are top class, had 8 motor yachts in the harbour this last few months with values over 100million USD each !!! So much to do on the island, my wife is an artist, these galleries, cinemas, even the cell phone are 4g , great comms , fabulous locals, you'll always find something going on, people to meet and stuff to do. This is no 3rd world country, plus airfares are very reasonable. If you stick to local produce , don't use a/c , drink wine moderately then you can live reasonably, it really depends on the cost of rental. Love to hook up when your here in march and have a chat. 'Johnny' and his lovely wife Maria will be around to. Its different from the Algarve , but just as beautiful if not more so and everyone spkeaks English , even Joey lol.

Bobbyveee and anyone else;
I just started reading this thread after online searching about places to retire. As Canadians my husband and I want to "snowbird" to and from Canada and a Commonwealth tropical destination. We plan on retiring in 5-6 years and want to spend the next few years visiting possible retirement destinations. BVI and USVI are too expensive. If our dollar doesn't recover, Hawaii will be out of the question. This has led us to check out the Commonwealth islands in the Caribbean. From what I've read so far STL is looking good especially after discovering the cost of living and crime rate comparison (on numbeo.com) to our 1.5 million ppl city of Calgary, Alberta. To my question (sorry for the ramble): as a first time visitor, but well travelled 50 year old couple, looking for a possible retirement destination, what area in STL would you suggest we make our home base for a 2 week visit to learn about the country? Any good websites you would recommend for condo rentals (blue reef I've read), 3-4 star hotels on the beach (non-all inclusives), specific sights/excursions?
Thanks to anyone responding,
Soontobefree!

Hi U2 . Lots of Canadians are finding StL to be the perfect place to winter or retire. The EC dollar is fixed at 2.67 to the US dollar.
You really need to be in the Rodney bay area for your first visit. Everything is at hand , no need for a car . but would suggest you did hire one so you could drive about and explore. Email Donnelly at Blue reef or ring him 1 209 233 6126 is toll free. he's great, very helpful. I can also give you names and tel#'s of good reliable car rentals and taxi operator.
You would enjoy the Wet and wild day out with Carnival sailing and the rainforest experience. Check out our monthly island mag. tropicaltraveller.com its very informative. You cant help but fall in love with this friendly , beautiful island.
There are a few hotels on the beach in Rodney bay, check out tripadvisor and see when they have deals on. When are you looking at your first visit?

Hi all!
I am new on this forum and grateful to see there is a place to talk about Lucia. I am moving to Lucia around February 2016. I have never been there but I've lived in places like Brazil, Costa Rica, Kenya, Thailand South Sudan, Mali... I am a 33 years old Spanish community worker with MA and experience in International Cooperation. I was looking for some Spanish people in Lucia, but it is being very hard... I've read a lot from BOBBYVEEE and I very much appreciate your input on Lucia. I was ready to ask many things and now I went blank. It makes me feel closer to the island just reading your posts, so thanks for being there!

Hi there.
Glad you enjoyed reading about this beautiful island, im sure you will just love it when you arrive. Its very much English speaking. There are a few French speaking like Martinique and Guadalope is Spanish speaking, but mostly English in the Caribbean. as many are Commonwealth countries. Feel free to ask any questions Rob

Hi All... I've learned tons just by reading this forum. I truly appreciate those who have taken the time to answer so many questions. Beginning life in a brand new country is exciting and nerve rackingly sickening at the same time. There's so many unknowns... And here's hoping someone's out there now. If Rodney Bay is best to nestle while checking out the island, what were some of the reliable taxi's and car rental company's recommended? We are looking to come sometime between the end of April and Mid May of this year. Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day!

If your looking for somewhere to stay, try Bay Garden Beach Resort , right on the beach and in the middle of Rodney Bay. For car rental and tours etc. use Remy Bruneau MD of Allstlucia www.allstlucia.com 1 758 452 485 Really nice people and very helpful. They have their office in the Royal Rex St Lucian hotel, nearly next door to the hotel recommended. Theres always good taxis parked in the Rex . If you come in April , let me know. we leave for Texas 29April , away for a few months. Let me know if theres anything else you need help with Robert

thank u sooo much, Robert! I do think we'll end up passing each other as the goal is end of April, early May. Nevertheless, will let you know how it goes if we make it in. The goal was actually last fall, but had to push it back. Safe travels in the meantime! Pam

Thank you again. And yes, that would be wonderful I've followed a bit of Joey's journey and think I remember when he first inquired about coming to StL. My husband will probably want to ask him a few questions regarding getting his business set up. He doesn't like the idea of the "silent' partner. I reminded him our son in law has family roots there. Perhaps we could consider reaching out to one of them if this is a necessary step. I'm hoping and praying my whole family will join us here eventually. Also, I did take a look at the hotel and it looks fresh and clean! The price is not bad either and they're running a special. I was wondering however, if the meal prices were the norm in the Rodney Bay area. I saw broccoli soup on the menu for $18.00 and the wings were 32! Perhaps I was viewing in Caribbean dollars and didn't realize?? I sure hope so... because I don't care to spend that kind of money on a bowl of soup. lol.

The hotel was recommended to me by other expat biz owners , so im sure it will be good The menu prices are in $ec lol USd is used for property prices and hotel accommodation . There are many wonderful restaurants within a short walk of the hotel. When you arrive on the island , get a taxi, its a standard $80 us to Rodney Bay. I can give you a tel # for the best guy on theb island Anthony , a super guy, very polite and punctual , we actually bought our Nissan Xtrail from him, it was the most polished car on the island LOL.
