We are searching for our retirement destination and are wondering if St. Lucia has abundant local fruits and vegetables? Can you buy tofu? Thank you!

Gravan, my family and I are meat eaters, but we have dealt with many vegetarians in our time from the SDA church. This Island will always have plenty of food to eat, because of all the fruit laden trees that exist here. In our yard, we have abundant banana, orange, almond, papaya, and bread fruit trees and there are always tons of fruit for sale on the side of the road and in the markets here. I haven't seen any tofu, but I haven't been looking either. I'll ask around and see if any of the supermarkets have some and how much it is. By chance do you eat fish?

Just another thought on this subject. The food here taste so much better than from we are from in the States. There is almost no preservatives here to speak of. The bread has to be put in the fridge or it will begin to mold two days after you bought it. Artificial sweeteners are taboo as well. For instance, Coke here, has real sugar in it and taste like the coke-a-cola I grew up on. No High Fructose Corn Syrup. I know you don't eat meat, but the beef and chicken are with out steroids here and taste wonderful. So, from a healthy diet perspective, its a great place to live, for sure....In my opinion.

Thank you everyone for your replies! We lived on Nevis for four years and most all vegies and fruits had to be imported. St. Lucia sounds much better. My next question would be in regards finding a long term rental, 2 or 1 bedroom, that is moderately priced. What areas of the island would you suggest and how much should we expect to pay? Thank you!

Really need to be north of Castries , preferably in the Rodney Bay areas. Talk to Connely at bluereef real estate they are the best letting agents on the island IMHO. You will need a furnished place, can get for less than $1000 ec /month. If you live too far out you will definitely need a car.
