I've just been reading about the recent homicides and "crime wave" that St Lucia is experiencing this year. And just when I was thinking very seriously about retiring there! I would really appreciate hearing from the forum on what you perceive and if you are very concerned or not. Thank you!

We didn't know anything about it until we read the paper. Its mainly in Castries and all to do with drugs, no tourists or expats in that area , all in the north or south , nothing like whats going on in Belize or even AC . Belize is #3 in the world for gun murder , St L not even on the list and USA and Canada have issued warnings about crime in Belize, nothing here. But if your frightened by the 'press' id advise you to stay in your own country

A good friend of mine who was born here and lived here for most of his childhood, then moved to the States for his early adulthood, then back again five years ago, who is very much in touch with the young men here on the Island, told me that all the violence is gang related. Small groups of men have went to the States, learned gang theology and have brought that action back here. He is not associated with any people like this, but is close enough to the situation to know where its roots are.
As far as Ex-pats having trouble here. In my opinion this is still one of the safest places on the planet. There are policemen and women everywhere and they're here to protect and serve, unlike in America. There's a different spirit here among the police force.
I relate St Lucia to the way the States were back in the 60's and 70's. And I think that's pretty safe, considering the way it is now in the United States.
