Would like to move to St Lucia in Jan 2016. I am a US Citizen. Planning to stay for two years. Ideally I'd like to get a job while I'm there. I don't have a trade speciality, so it would be retail/hospitality work. Is this possible?

CMG9,
The short answer to your question is "no".
The long answer is that in that industry, you would be taking a job away from a Lucian national, which this government frowns on greatly. Every work permit has to be approved by the government committee who keeps their thumb on keeping all the non-nationals from working here, because the UN-employeement is so high here.
Just curious, where are you coming from and why did you choose St Lucia. And what skills do you have? There's always an answer. You just need to know what path to take.

Joey hit the 'nail on the head'. The Caribbean isn't a cheap place to stay / live , about 15 to 20 % more than USA on average. Unless you have independent means , don't think about long term stays

However, from my research, St Lucia was about the cheapest place to move to. If you are interested I can give you the places we found that were cheaper, but they all have a lot of draw backs. Places such as Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, etc. All true third world nations, unlike St Lucia, which is clearly a second world nation, but Bobby is correct, it is more expensive. I would place it about 30-40% higher, but who's counting.....LOL

My girlfriend is moving there in Jan 2016 to attend medical school for two years. I'd like to go with her. I'm coming from Colorado. I have a BS in Communication, have worked in IT and retail, but no specific unique skill. Unfortunately. I do need to work, because I have student loans.

Maybe, you could get a job at a radio station. If your BS is in communication, that seems to be in your field of expertise. maybe you could get some experience at a station in the states before you come. Do you have an interest in that sort of thing?
