Hello there,
I'm a new member ( I'm from Rome) and I'm going to move in September 2015 in Saint Lucia due to my job. In the meantime I'm looking for housing and i'm thinking which area is the right one as will work in La Toc Area but told me is a residential one and maybe can think about to rent an apartment in Rodney Bay. If will do that for sure need to have a transportation and was thinking to rent a scooter. Please, may you give me some tips about that, any suggestions about distance, time to/from La Toc/Rodney and if there is a public transportation? Thanks for your kindly attention Regards Giammarco

Hi Giammy. The best places to stay /rent are north of Castries. This website will give you an insight to long term rentals. www.bluereefrealestate.com I assume that you maybe going to work at Sandals. I know Sandals do run their own work buses, but don't know when and where to. Very few people use two wheels, its so dangerous, narrow roads, fast driving and deep rain channels at the side of the road . Your best bet would be to buy a used car for around $10,000 US and sell when you leave. Car hire is expensive. There is public transport, mini buses run everywhere, mainly used by the locals. You would have to go into Castries, then change to go to La Toc. Please keep asking, we will help in anyway we can. You will love the island. If you are used to motorbikes, then buying a motor bike is an option, we drive on the left here. Good luck

Hi Bobby Thanks for your kindly email. I will keep in mind your suggestions and I was thinking about a scooter just because do not want buy a car just for myself or at least buy/rent the one similar to a Smart ( for 2 pax by Mercedes) and see how is going on. I will work for Sandals and for sure will check their buses schedule. I'm in touch with Blue Reef and they are going to help me a lot. I'm very exciting about this new step and be part of the Island. Thanks a lot Giammarco

Hi Giammy. Tell Don at Blue reef the expat forum recommended, he knows me well. All the cars are imported used from Japan/Korea, Audi /BMW sells mainly new , huge price, theres about a 50% import duty. A little Jimny would suit you or similar. I think my friend Joey on the forum has a friend into used imported cars, he'll read this for sure. When do you arrive?

Hi Bobby,
Thanks again.
I will come there by the middle of September as they are working on visa and should be ready at the end of this month ( usually takes 2/3 weeks).
If you can give me a contact of your friend regarding cars.
Do you think living in Rodney Bay and working in La Toc can be suitable and easy to do daily?

Hi Giammy. I'll email Joey, he's on this forum. The only problem you have commuting from Rodney Bay to La Toc, is going thro Castries. When cruise ships are in port the town is full. But the trip takes 20 to 30 minutes. A lot depends on what hours / times you are working at Sandals. You don't have a great choice of places to rent, but anywhere north of Castries on the west coast is good. Don at Blue reef will guide you im sure.

Hello Giammy,
Blessings to you,
I second Sir Robert's thoughts. Getting through Castries between the hours of 8 am and 9:30 Am as well as between 4 and 6 PM is very difficult, so say the least.
The one advantage of a motor bike is that here you can legally drive between lanes of traffic, cutting your travel time to well over half. Its dangerous as hell, but if you're a bit of a dare devil, and handle a bike well, then the benefit is yours.
Also, there is a back way around Castries and once you get to know it, on a motor bike, you should be fine, low traffic,
Also, there's lots of fine housing on that back way, which takes you pretty close to the eastern side of the Island, at much cheaper cost. Don at Blue Reef should be able to help you in that way. Just email him with that suggestion, housing on the back road from Rodney Bay to Castries.
Let me know if I can help,
Joey

Hi. Im sure ive seen a bike/scooter place on the main road as your coming from Rodney Bay into Castries, its about a mile before the city, im sure Joey can confirm or take a look as he drives by. Or he may know other places or ask his friend Adrian. If your not a two wheel user you might change your mind after seeing the traffic and roads , !!! Look forward to meeting up , we get back on Oct 24th . Take care

Hi. Monthly rentals , when they are advertised often tell you whats included. Utilities are rarely included, but TV , gardener , pool maintainence often are. Electricity is expensive, running AC can be very costly, Internet , phone and TV are reasonable. Trust this helps

I forgot to mention, water is also reasonable, and cooking if by gas is using a LPG cylinder which you exchange as you run out, LPG is cheap.
