Hi everyone. I am doing a work exchange in Saint Lucia starting on the 16th. I am from New York. This is my first time doing long term travel outside of the US. I have traveled for leisure but never long term.
I will be traveling with my 11 year old daughter who I will homeschool while I am there.
I have a place to stay in Choiseul in exchange for working with the home owner with her personal business. She is from France but has lived there for about 5 years now and also has two children.
I was going to buy a one way ticket because even though I only plan to work with her until November 30th I do not yet know what country I want to go to after I am done there. Will I have a problem since I only have a one way ticket?
With regard to US Credit/Debit card, will I be able to use them there? If not, how easy is it to get an account there as someone who isn't a native and be able to wire transfer my funds from my US account or maybe even from Paypal into an account? I am an entrepreneur and work online, so I have income from the US. But all of my funds go into US based accounts.
Does anyone know of activities for children close to where this city is? Like swimming, singing, dance lessons?
Are there any homeschooling groups or communities that anyone knows of where I could connect with other homeschooled children or homeschooling parents?
As far as things to do for me as an adult, how far is where I will be from some of the places there are to connect with other expats?
Thanks in advance to any help that can be offered.

Hi. It sounds like you've not looked at a map or read much about St Lucia. You cant fly to the island without a ticket out. As you are only there till Nov. I wouldn't bother opening a bank account. Take US dollars withyou and your plastic works in all ATM's so no problem. Lots of home schooling in St Lucia. Choiseul, is a small village down in the SW of St L miles from the usual are of expats in the NW. Not come across any expats on the forum living in this area, theres not a lot to do for expats there, its pretty and quaint, but that's about it. By the way, theres only on City , Castries. You will most certainly need to have transport to go anywhere. Wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for your response. I actually have done both, map and reading. I read in many places (including on this forum) about the need for a return ticket but also that many people (including you in past posts) had never actually been asked to provide proof of a return ticket so my question was more so confirming/verifying if that's still the case or if they actually do check for that return ticket now.
I know that where from looking at the map that I will be is far from where most people here seem to be, I was looking to find out if there were any people / resources else where. Based on your response it sounds like the answer is no.
Thank you for your quick response. Your forum is helpful!

Hi. Unless you have proof you need to stay long term, ie working for a Co. who have provided you with a work permit, some airlines wont issue you a one way ticket. They could have to repatriate you at their cost. Sorry I cant be more helpful on your location, ive never been there nor know anybody in that area. Im glad you find the forum helpful, just wish in this case we could be more helpful. Robert
