I plan to move to st.lucia.. I was supposed to move last summer but something came up and ive decided to postpone as well as save up some more. My partner lives there already..we have an apartment and a car. I wouldn't need a work permit as I sorted my citizenship (my parents were born in St. Lucia). I work in a private nursery and have done for some years now..also have done nannying. Ive heard of expats moving down and looking for nannies etc but don't know of anyone at the moment who is looking for one..would also have to try my luck seeing if I can get a job in a school or daycare. If I was to save an amount to see me through for lets say upto 1 year in the event that I couldn't find work..how much roughly should I be looking at saving? I have a 5 year old child btw so will also be looking at schools. I like the look of dame pearlette but no idea if it is oversubscribed like alot of the other popular schools over there

Hi Nikki. Not quite sure why you are asking this forum how much you need to get you through a yr. Surely your b/f whose already living here and knows your life style can give that answer far more correctly than I or other expats. I don't have young kids and Joey, the other expat on the forum with young kids, home tutors. Why not get your b/f to ring around the schools ,day care centres and see what's available both for a job point of view and a place for your 5 yo. I know jobs are scarce, and I think your best bet to to search around as soon as you arrive. I'm sure you know, living in StvL isn't cheap, but depends so much on your lifestyle. Good luck

I guess i thought someone could maybe give an average amount on how much people live off in St. Lucia. For example if someone from St. Lucia asked me how much one could live off in UK I'd be able to give my opinion..just thought those living in St. Lucia and have been for a while could give their opinion on a realistic amount. My partner lives by himself and isn't too sure of how much. My lifestyle is pretty much like the average person ..work and occasionally go out to socialise.
Sorry..guess I'll ask somewhere else.. :S

Hi Nikki Its a help to know your from the UK. You had said in your profile. The cost of living is similar to UK. Especially imported goods. We live on around $500usd/WK food,$200 entertainment and wine .utilities around $250/month. We also own a car, so add anothern$100/month. Our rent is $1850/ month . you already have an apartment and car, but if you want to live similarly as you do in UK these prices are for a couple. Work is difficult to get here unemployment around 25% and pay is low. Very good luck in your endeavours. Robert

Thank you
I understand work is very hard to come by. I was offered a job in one of the popular schools down there for september but I had to return to the UK and therefore had to turn it down. The pay was also worked out to be about 4 times less compared to what I get here to do the same thing which is very worrying as despite the low pays, alot of things are in the same price range if not more expensive than the UK. Right now it's very off putting to move as my biggest fear is struggling to get by and having money problems..my partner just about gets by so wouldn't be able to support us if anything happened. Anyway will see how it goes

Hi Nikki. I understand your position, if your son has been raised in the UK and you have a well paid job there, I think moving here would be a big wrench for you both. Most expats here bare in businesses they own or like myself retired with an income that allows us to live well here. I'm not being negative, just practical. Good luck and Happy Christmas

Thanks for reply
I do have a business idea and was advised by a few people that it is a good idea but just know it will be difficult to start up especially due to financial reasons. I planned to save a good amount to see us through a year..go down and then hope that I'd find work but I know that's very risky because if it didn't work out I'd be screwed.
I appreciate your respose..I don't see it as negative..it's good to be realistic as possible in these types of situations.
Have a lovely Christmas
