Hi, I'm interested in applying for a job in St Lucia, but my husband doesn't think he'd be able to find work there. Does anyone know if there is much work for electricians, and also how transferable his Canadian red seal ticket might be (what he would need to do to get the equivalent education in St Lucia)? Any information would be much appreciated.

Hi Becky. Most jobs are reserved for locals, founded to get a work permit before you can work, or get a local company to take you on because you have skills locals don't. I think it unlikely that your husband would find work. He could star this own company, but that's not really going to help as he has no contacts. Does he know anything about refrigeration ? , a good friend on here needs skilled people in a/c , and all its aspects, but your hubby would need skills unavailable here. Unemployment is high in the Caribbean, jobs are protected . Sorry I can't be more positive. Good luck.

Hello Becky,
Bobby is so right, Jobs are hard to come by here, but technical jobs, such as electrical service and repair is very much in demand. Wages, even for that are low, but again, owning your own business is the way to go. If your husband can troubleshoot and repair electrical pieces of equipment, then there's a place for him to make good money here. If all he does is run conduit and run wire, then probably not.
It would cost about 15K to establish a business here, plus a truck, used-10K and shipping tools in- another 8-10K.
Please let us know if we can help in any way.

Thank you for the replies. I'm a helicopter pilot and sounds like I could make a similar wage there as here in Canada... but unfortunate that it would be hard for my husband. Does anyone know if his certification would be valid there, if he were to start his own business (would he have to do some kind of equivalency exam or training or could he just start working)?

LOL, I know where that job is intact I know where two broken elevators are. The problem as I understand it is spare parts the lack of them or the time it takes ton get them, these elevators are old. By the way Becky, the power here is 220v. The wiring etc is straight from the UK

I think there are less than 20 elevators on the island and people who do repair, the problem is getting the correct parts flown in. Don't think theres a job opportunity there, maybe a side line.

Thanks for all the responses! Sounds like we'd have to count on just my paycheque to live there, and see what odd jobs he could pick up (if anything). If he could find work easily, I'd apply there in a heartbeat... but I'm not sure how easily we could live on just one income (we have two preschool kids as well). Appreciate all the info, and we'll be in touch if this idea goes any further than the dreaming stage.

Thanks again for all the info. We're considering the move for this fall, if I'm able to get a position (if they're even hiring at that point). It looks as though my job would be based in Castries... are there any reasonably priced areas a bit closer than Rodney Bay for a family that you could recommend? My kids are ages 3 and 4. The oldest will be starting school in the fall, so we would also have to figure out whether to homeschool or enroll her in a school there.... she is very social, so I'm sure she would prefer to go to school if possible. A lot of things to consider, but we'd really like to give it a shot.

Hi Becky. The airport is at Vigie , which is the south side of Castries. There's also a very good school there. I can't SPK about jobs openly on the forum so will pm You little later. There's a lot of rumours going on about the heli. Co. We heard its up for sale. Also saw a large Bristows heli land on Tues lunchtime. Not sure what they were doing here. Rob.

Hi Becky. Just checking to see if your still coming to St Lucia. Just heard Island Helicopters have taken on a new pilot. From Austria.

No, it's not me. But I had heard that they had just hired an Austrian pilot (an old coworker of mine was there until just recently, which is how I heard about the company). I'm hoping they'll have a position open at the end of the busy season here in Canada for a couple years, but it depends when they are hiring next. It might be a long shot if their current pilot(s) are working out well and decide to stay long-term. Never know until you try, though! It's snowing here right now and my 4 year old keeps asking why Grandma gets to live where it's warmer and we don't (she's about 1400kms further south than us). Really, none of our reasons for living this far north seem insurmountable at this point :)
