Electrical Appliances - Customs Tax

Good Morning!

My husband and I are moving to St Lucia from the UK next week and we're organising for our household items to be shipped to our new home.

I've read that electrical items incur customs fees but I've also read that buying electrical items in St Lucia is very expensive! We had intended to ship our microwave, iron, hoover etc but are now unsure of what to do. Does anybody else have experience with this? Should we ship our items across or should we buy new things there?

Thanks,
Tasmyn

Hi. Small appiances arent that expensive. Weve never ever used a Hoover here, mainly because carpet isnt used. A micro wave and iron are not expensive. Customs and excise have a book that tells them the value of your goods and they use that to charge you. Havent a clue what that rate is. Have you bought volume on a container ? What i would say is furniture here is extremely expensive and the cheaper stuff, rubbish, certainly ship good furniture. Where about's on the island are you moving to? I assume you have a broker her to look after your shipment. Good luck

Hi,

Yes we have a broker in St Lucia who will look after the shipment once it arrives. I believe we have bought volume on a container yes. We have decided not to bring any furniture with us except a large oak table. This is the only really expensive piece of furniture we own. This is because we were told that furniture costs an absolute fortune to ship and we are renting rather than buying a property. It appears that most, if not all rental properties come fully furnished? My husband will be working at the call centre for Sandals, which I believe is in Castries. We will be choosing a rental property once we arrive, as we wanted to see any property we rent before moving in! We've been told Rodney Bay is the place which is best suited to expats? Thanks very much for your help.

Hi Tasmyn . OK I understand your position now. Yes many rentals come furnished. Usually include elec. appliances as well. Rodney bay is the place to rent for sure. You can actually do without a vehicle there. Yes there are L schools, i'll ask a local friend who he used for his daughter.
There are 3 Sandals on the island, not sure if theres one call centre, and dont know where that is. You most certainly dont want to live in Castries.
Bluereef realestate are probably the best people on the island to rent thro, i also know others, what kinda place are you looking for and how much per month ? Assume you will rent for atleast 6 months. We would be pleased to meet up with you and help in anyway we can. Robert & Carolyn

Hi Robert & Carolyn,

Thanks so much for your offer to help! We'll be staying indefinitely, as my husband's on a permanent contract. I came across the agency you mentioned during a search online. Our budget is a maximum of $3000 per month. What do you think we could get for that in Rodney Bay? We're expecting St Lucia to be fairly expensive but not as expensive as London, which is eye-watering! That is very kind of you, we'd like very much to meet for a drink or coffee. I say we're arriving next week but that's incorrect. We'll be in Grenada for a couple of weeks whilst my husband has training then flying to St Lucia after that. Please private message me your email address and I'll get in contact closer to the time.

Thanks,
Tasmyn
