Hi Kelly,

First of all I was wondering if you are still in Almaty? And, secondly I would love to meet up with you guys whenever convenient. I just moved to Almaty and haven't got any friends as yet.

Best Regards,

Jimmy

Yulduz, around usd 500 you can get a small flat, one bedroom construction from the 70' about 15 min driving from the downtown. Grocery prices average 30% higher than in Spain. A pizza in a medium range Pizzeria cost usd 8-10.

To IgorB

Is salary of USD 2800 would be sufficient for a single (not partying)? Is it possible to rent a flat for 500? And how much would cost food (no restaurants) on average per adult?

Thanks so much
S

In KZ would be considered as a very high salary. As a matter of fact if you have family that money would be enough to survive by end of the month but not much.

Hi, for this money nowadays you can find an apartment easily. Buy a local newspaper, called Krisha ("Roof") ask local help to contact because less than 1% of the ALA population speaks english. not suer what you mean North Side of the city. there is a hill , called Kok Tobe is apopular leasure park and some restaurant up there. I wouldn't suggest to go to a realproperty agency, because their trick is to know, what is your housing allowance and ajust the price for the max allowance limit.

Just transferred down from Astana and hoteling for a week or two.

Any tips on how or where to find a secure apt on the north side of town?

I'm budgeted to about $1800 a month.

I don't know its international reputation but within Almaty, it is a University that many students want to go to. Weaknesses may be that they are thinking that their reputation in some areas also moves into others. They are offering a law degree now but charging a price as if you were going to a well established law school.

I'm not sure about the last 12 months, I've been here since the end of last year and about a month and a half ago the Tenge fell against the dollar and it set people a little crazy here. Prices are all over the place. Some things are up, I'm finding that you can negotiate lower rents though.

I am not sure what nationality you are but I think you would need a minimum of 30,000 GBP pounds a year. Around the same as if you were living in London. The biggest expense would be some where to live, about 3,000 US dollars a month for some where decent. Look on the estate agents sites, Scott Holland for flats and prices. Internet is over 20 GBP a month for the lowest grade sevice. Food is more expensive than UK, not for everything but over all. You really need a car to enjoy Kazakhstan, there are fantastic places to go but you need a small 4 wheel drive more expensive than the UK. Petrol is cheap, servicing is expensive as are parts. Then you have to consider the fares home which have just gone up, check out KLM, BMI, air astanna. Hope this helps

Hi, may I ask if you have any idea about KIMEP in Almaty? Also, in your opinion, how much do you think a single male (who is not into partying) should be making in a place like Almaty? I am considering a position in Almaty and your input will be appreciated.

Thanks
NB
