Hello there I have been using this recently and came across your post and thought that maybe you could help me. Me and my girlfriend (she is Polish) will be coming to Wroclaw in January of next year and I'm looking for work. I have managerial experience in hospitality and was wondering what I could do as I only speak basic Polish. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi i've just moved to Wroclaw from Scotland for the first time with my Polish girlfriend. For the time being i'm doing ok for work as i still have Scottish clients and the internet is great. but would like to meet with some folk and find out their experience moving to Wroclaw. My polish is terrible at the moment but getting there. Went to the 'Road to Nowhere' and loved the music. so let me know if you want to meet up for a drink and chat about Wroclaw. I am Polish, born in Wroclaw but Since May 2005 I live in the UK.
I am thinking of moving back home because my life isn't easy here. I am on my own in the Uk and my family is in Poland. I wonder how you guys survive in Poland?
I think this forum is a good way to meet people from Wroclaw.
Some of you guys can't speak Polish.... If I was in Poland I would be more than happy to meet foreigners and teach them Polish. If you know Polish people then ask them to help you :) I am sure they will help you.
I will be in Wroclaw between 9th - 16th of June, If anyone would like to meet up then please let me know :) It would be nice to meet new people :) I wish you guys all the best in Poland :)

Hi Everyone!
I'm a new guy in Wroclaw, originally from Scotland but been living in England for ten years or so. I've moved here with my lovely Polish girlfriend. Our long term plans are to settle in the suburbs or perhaps a nearby village and do the commute. Ultimately we want to get married here in Poland and have at least two children (one boy, one girl)! At this point in time we have a flat in Wraclaw and my girlfriend has a job with HP but unsurprisingly I'm struggling a bit for employment. My most recent employment history is in retail sales and prior to that engineering and personal security. I'm pretty much willing to do anything at the moment so if anyone has any words of advise or pointers to job opportunities I'm ready and willing to hear from you.

Hi all,
I'm 30 years old and from NZ, been living in London for last 7 years with Italian citizenship also. I've just moved to Olesnica, and will be relocating to Wroclaw in the next few weeks.
I've come over here with my fiancee to live and learn polish.
Any tips on jobs (I work in sales/marketing) would be helpful (note I only speak english), and also if anyone knows of any new flats/houses in the city centre for rent then please let me know as we are currently looking.

Recent development in both our careers made us reconsider moving back to Wroclaw.

I'm Belgian but with Polish parents. Unfortunatly they didn't teach me any single word Polish. I've been visiting Poland for the last 5 years quite often. I'm considering moving to Wroclaw when my army training ends. I already got a place but the issue is work...
Anybody got some tips? I'm able to speak and write Dutch/English. French is a bit rusty and I got some notion of German.

I have been living in Wroclaw for two and a half years now. It's a great place - but I agree the language is very hard!
Best to do is work for an international company. Most of them sponsor language courses for their foreign employees :-)

Hey,
It is easy to find work in Wroclaw. I am a Business Process Analyst working at HP.
Polish language while beneficial is not necessary for working in HP here.
However - for almost all the international companies in Poland you must know a foreign language other than English and Polish. Without this you may struggle...for more senior positions you may be ok.

I'm brazilian and my husband is polish, we were living in Ireland before, and we are just about to move to Wroclaw next week, as my husband got a job there.
I really want to work too! I'm civil engineer with experience in all kinds of buildings construction, maintenance and coordination and managment of Telecom Projects.
Unfortunately i can't speak polish yet, I'm learning, i can speak and understand the very basics (I've been here for 5 months) and I'm going to do the intensive program in Wroclaw. But this language is really hard to learn and ever to pronounce the words!!!
I speak portuguese and english, and I can comunicate in spanish.
I'm looking for a job first in my area, but I'm open for any job like teaching or whatever.
If you can give me any help i would really appreciate!!

This is a response to a very old post, and I'm not British - I'm Australian - does that count? :)
Anyhow, I'm hoping to move to Poland to live and work in 2010. My wife is Polish and comes from Wroclaw, so this is where we'd like to settle. Do you have any ideas about how to get a gig? I seriously like the country and culture, but my language is terrible and in my line, communication is everything (I'm a process / documentation specialist). Hoping there are international companies looking for fluent English speakers out there.

Hi BritPol and the rest of you expats. I'm a Swedish student/programmer thinking about trying to live in Poland for a while. I'd love to learn the Polish language and I've gotten quite interested in Wroclaw (though I've never actually been there). A few questions remain:
As everyone else, I'm wondering about the current situation in finding a job. I speak English (and Swedish...) fluently and French with no problem, but unfortunately neither Polish nor German. I'm a self-taught programmer with little commercial experience but with great skills in languages ranging from x86 assembly to C, Java, Perl.
Also wondering about prices and availability when it comes to renting a flat in Wroclaw. What could a semi-central, small flat cost and how hard would it be to find?

Consider a moment. Were you exposed to English before going to England? Perhaps lessons at school? Films? Pop songs? Lessons beyond school? Gazetta Wyborcza "Polish your English"? Maybe even books or magazines? Even something as simple as brand names or shops which give you an idea of word structure helps. Most English speakers have no experience of Polish at all. At all.
Then lets look at the ease of learning the two languages. My father-in-law is a professor of linguistics studying Slavic languages. He tells me that English is one of the easiest languages to begin and communicate in fluently. Polish ranks amongst the second hardest group.
Lastly look at the cultural environment. Here in Poland I'm often encouraged to speak in English. At work I'm expected to speak English - I'm required to write in English. My staff want to learn English and all but refuse to speak Polish with me. English is considered a plus here. Not so in reverse. You have no choice. Using Polish is out of the question for you.
I agree with your hidden sentiment that an English speaker living in Poland should learn Polish. I can't agree with you that somehow thats the same difficulty as you living in England and learning one of the easiest foreign languages in the world.

So I have to agree. You see the problem is educated Poles speak very good English. A recent interview at Siemens (not mine) a candidate was asked what foreign languages they speak and told English didnt count. Sorry but I dont see why anyone would employ someone who doesnt speak Polish for an admin/public service role in Poland. Would you employ someone who doesnt speak English in England?
That said, I think a native English speaker in IT could find a job at ADB in Zielona Gora, Osmosys in Wroclaw or probably S3 in Wroclaw (it being run by John Mulcahey from Ireland) - if they were good enough.
As for English teaching its easy to find a job (I know I have a mate who does it with no previous experience). Start with a company teaching Engloish, gain some experience then build your own client base seems to be the way to go. Expect 50PLN an hour when you start and up to 100 after a few years (brutto).
I came to Poland with no Polish and eventually found a job after 3 months, but I had to be repared to live anywhere and then move. Also I have highly specialised skills (rare). I was told by headhunting firm in Warsaw that I had no chance and simply found a job through persistenly sending my CV to every company in IT I could find in Poland. Moral? You cant be selective I think if you speak no Polish.

to anyone who wants to know, i have been working in wroclaw for about 12 months now, problem is i have worked for an english company whilst i have been here, my contract is coming to an end now and i have desperatly been searching for jobs and unless you speak polish your in a pickle unless you want to teach english and there are not that many vacancies. so my advice to anyone wanting to work in wroclaw is learn polish, good luck

Ive just recently relocated to Wroclaw with my partner and Im looking for work, however like yourself I dont speak any Polish. Im interested in finding work in an international company where English is the main language and just wondering if you would be able to offer me some suggestions. Recently Ive been a Personal Assistant and think this is probably my best option. However Ive also been a conference co-ordinator and office manager.
If you have any advice (companies which you know are looking for English speakers) or even a recruitment company which deals with English placements I would be extremely grateful.

Typical prices for flats in Wroclaw have risen a lot in the last 3-4 years but its safe to say a finished new property will sell around 3000 PLN depending on district etc. So an apartment with 4 rooms is within your price range for sure in the north. The tricky part is the garden. If you mean a private garden, I think you will be looking for a long time. If you mean communal, then yes you will find this for this price.

IT jobs...
there are a lack of IT people in Wroclaw right now. The mayor of Wroclaw has been on UK TV asking Poles to come back home and take the jobs here. Major players are Siemens and LG but also Rinf outsourcing company, S3 electronics, Osmosys, Volvo and dozens of others. To be frank, if you can't find a job in IT in Wroclaw, you just arent trying. If you send me some details from you of the kinds of skills you have, I can have a look through the local adverts to see if anything matches for you.

I'd still like to know if any of the companies you refer to would be interested in someone like me who doesn't come from a pure IT background but has 4 years experience mainly with Linux doing admin and development. At the moment I'm teaching English in Germany ( it was the easiest way to move abroad ). If you could perhaps pass on the details of your contacts

1. If anyone needs help finding a job in IT in wroclaw, get in touch. I'm not hiring anymore but I know of loads fo places. Wroclaw is desperate for good IT professionals. I know poersonally the directors of two local companies seeking people and I can recommend other places. Frankly if you cant find a job in IT in wroclaw, you just arent trying.
Secondly, I know english teachers here and can put you in touch with people in schools teaching english who treat native spealkers as Gems in the crown. I'm not saying they pay so well :-) but yes I can find you work here no problem.
Thirdly...if you are British in Wroclaw, get in touch. I am considering creating an ex-pat 1 time per month meeting as the number oif Brits here is growing and growing. We have talked to the mayor of Wroclaw and there is as yet no community but I know of 5 of us already (discounting Norman Davies :-), and my guess is for each one I know there are 1 or 2 I dont.
As for liking Wroclaw...well you know, I came here on a whim with a job. I now have a house and a 3 year old who speaks to me in Polish...understanding 3 year olds is hard enough without that! So I guess, yes I could be here a while ... life is strange.

I was interested in your post of 2/7/2005. You mention that you needed some programmers. Is this still the case ? I have several years experience of C++, Java and scripting on Linux and Windows.
I lived in Poland last year so have some Polish and know Wroclaw quite well. If you still need programmers or know of any good tips for getting work in Wroclaw I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give.

I've just moved into Wroclaw for 5 months. I'm of Polish descent, but hail from the lovely city that is Birmingham. I'm currently doing so research in the city of Wroclaw and the rest of the region, but am keen on meeting up with British expats....strangley difficult to find in this city (Krakow they seem to be everywhere now). I've met a couple of Brits who teach english to Poles, but am also looking for more contacts....

I'm thinking about moving to Wroclaw, maybe doing IT if I can find a job. I spent last year teaching English in a small town near Opole. I'd like to try living in a bigger town, and Wroclaw is a nice place.
I've applied to a few IT jobs in Poland through the monster website but without success. I noticed in your reply to AngloPol you were looking for programmers - OK a while ago! Is that still the case ?
How difficult is it for English speakers to get IT jobs ?
I'm between jobs just now, so if it's best to be in the area that wouldn't be a problem.

Spiz is great, the best beer without any doubt in Wroclaw. Smalec reminds me too much of the lard covered chips we used to get in the UK :-).
Love to meet up some time at Spiz and discuss marrying Polish ladies, life in Wroclaw and life in general as an ex pat in Poland.
As for getting a job, we can talk about that : what do you do? If its programming I could use a few people right now. If not, I can at least send you a few copies of Gazeta Wyborcza with job adverts.
In general its tough, especially if you don't speak Polish but there are a host of international firms who will hire native English speakers without much Polish.

How are You enjoying Wroclaw ? If You've been there two years then it must be to your liking :o)
I'm a Brit but of Polish parents ... and I married a Polish girl about 5 yrs ago and her home town is Wroclaw. We live in England at the moment but are considering moving over to Poland. I'd be interested to get your view on employment prospects for English/Polish speakers in Poland apart from teaching English :o)
What do You think of the restaurant and bar Spiz ?
I may be coming over to Poland in the next month or two, visiting friends in Warsaw but also planning to spend a few days in Wroclaw.
Maybe meet up for a pint of Spiz beer .. with some smalec ??
