Hi there, Susan of Oregon,
Yes, I'm still digging out stuff about dear old Mbeya which I attended 1957-58, and I'd be glad to share anything -plus cheerful recollections about the place - if you want.
What I find amazing is that Google Earth shows that the footprint of the school and its buildings is virtually identical today, albeit now surrounded by the sprawl of the ever-spreading Mbeya town.
Tell me how you'd like to proceed! I've been putting all the old-and-new photos of the place together in a Powerpoint presentation and I'd be happy to share that with you for starters.

Are you still collecting information about Mbeya school? I was there from 1958 tp 1960 and would love to connect with anyone who can help to refresh my memories of our school days, and of being an expat child in Tanganyika at that time.

Hi Zuluboat My Mum and Dad were friends with your Mum and Dad and I am sure that we used to play together when visiting. my Dad also worked for EAP&T his name was Jack Hawthorn. I now live in South Africa in Natal at a place called Port Edward.

I am a Kenyan citizen who has always been interested in pre-colonial Kenya and especially that of Nakuru because that's my hometown . Can you share any memories you have as a child please? Thank you

I also went to Soni in the early 70's, my Dad also worked for Tenesco, then Brooke Bond Fray Bentos. My 2 brothers also went to Soni (Graham and George).We left Tanzania around 74/75 when the Brooke Bond factory got taken over by the government.
Before going to Soni, I went to the International school in Dar. It'S good to read the stories and memories of people who lived in Tanzania, as I loved the place, having been born there and didn't want to leave.

I went to Mbeya in 1955-1959. I lived in Oyster Bay in Dar (went to Oyster Bay Primary) & my father was 'Bunny' Buckley who worked for the East African Post & Telegraphs. We then moved to Nairobi. I know live in Sydney Australia. Have fond memories of Mbeya...espcially the River Gardens. Those 5 month terms were long and I think I was in Stanley House. Colin

Your post was a real 'blast from the past'! I was at Mbeya school when the Governor visited - I remember a band playing - the first one I had ever seen! My father was also a DC at one time ( Jim Pearson) but working for CDC in the Mbeya area at the time the Governor visited so he would possibly have known your father but unfortunately as a child at school the 'grown ups' all looked alike to me. The only thing I can remember about the Governor himself was his very odd appearance - all in white. I have better memories of having special cake at afternoon tea and being glad he came because of it.

I was in Tanzania between '52 & '61 . My father was with the Police and we lived in Dar , Mwanza , Shinyanga , Musoma , Tarime , Tukuyu and Mbeya . I was at Arusha school '55/'56 . Mbeya school '57/'58 and Iringa '59/'61 . At Mbeya I was in Wallington House , head was Francis and then Corgi Morgan . At Iringa I was in Junior and then Williams house . I am in Australia now , but have also wandered the world . I too did my nostalgia trip back to TZ in '98 and for the first time for years felt at home ! If your interested , I have heaps of memories and will be happy to share them .

Not sure when in 59 I joined Mbeya School, but can't recall the Governor visiting so it must have been early in the year. If you have ever visited the website www.ntz.com you will find it now has a forum through which you can more easily contact old aquaintances although the forum is at present in its infancy.

I noticed that you wqere in Mbeya School in 1957. I wonder if you were still there when Sir Richard Turnbull (Governor) visited the school in 1959. I'm trying to trace people who may remember the visit. Picasso

I was born in Mwanza in 1951. I am researching information about my father (Alexander Stephen) who worked in Tanganyika between 1945 - 1966. I believe he visited Mbeya School as District Commissioner in 1958 /59 with the then Governor Sir Richard Turnbull. I'm trying to locate people who may remember that visit and my father.

My name is Chris. I was born in Nakuru in 1942. My first memories however are of Dar-es Salaam where my father worked for the East African Power and generating system. We lived near the power station and I remember many days playing around the district: the beaches along the creek, the army camp, Oyster bay, Nsasani, Njamwema. I went to the Primary school in Dar and then my parents shipped me off to the boarding school at Mbeya. My mothers family was from Nairobi; her brothers were Laurie, Freddie and Alec Campling. Id be very glad to hear from you. Maui is one of my special holiday places (Although Kauai is at the top of the list

Five years after you posted yours.....I was at Mbeya School in '57: my dad was second in command of the KAR in Dar and I well remember the two day trip by Albion bus between Dar and Mbeya at the beginning & end of term. I'd be very happy to share memories and photos

I was born in Iringa the year 1949, and I grew up there untill 1962. We had a tobacco farm there. I went to the Greek boarding school in Arusha.
Last time I visit our farm in Iringa was back in 1987. they were still few Greeks at the greek club in Iringa.At the same year I visit friends in Dar and Arusha.
I moved in the U.S. America 1978 untill 1994 . Now I live in Poland.
I would like to hear from anyone who lived in Iringa...

Hi,
I was born in Morogoro in 1964 and grew up in Tanga. I went to boarding school in Arush - called St Constantine's - where we had loads of kids (mostly Greek) from Iringa and Mbeya. My brother went to St Michael's school in Soni.
We left Tanzania around 1978-1979 and moved to Australia. Although this is a great place to be...I still call Tanzania home and still miss it.

I to0 lived in Dar and attended St Michaels and St Georges School Iringa. There is a very large reunion scheduled to be held in 2003 , a very large number of people are attending from all over the world. Have a look at www.iringa.org which is a large website dedicated to the school with photos and addresses and pictures of local reunions held. Im sure you will love it. I live in the UK now, would be rather nice to live somewhere so romantic as Hawaii best wishes
