Topic Title: How about motor scooters or motor bikes?

"Motos" are the mosquitos of the Nicaraguan roadways. In town they are the biggest hazard to a car driver. They know no shame or road rules. They will park on both your bumpers locking you in. They will run at night with no lights. They will load four children on with them. So many colors, so few helmuts, so many without mufflers, and they account for most of the road mortalities.

the ag chems in the tobacco fields get the bad rap, but the pollution from wood fires, trash burning, unregulated industry, buses, and particulate matter from bad roads are the worst. I see very few people smoking, but I don't go into local bars and casinos.

Do you think all those private guards, verjas, and serpentina are for decoration?
Of course not.....Ive lived in central america for a long time.....and I love my bars......would not live without them.......But I just had the impression that if there was anyplace in Nica where you COULD live normally without bars and serpentina it would be Esteli.........But you will need a gas mask for all the smoke...........As the epicenter of the tobacco industy its a smokers paradise........i swear the fabricas must just pass em out freely to encourage smoking..........one of the nicest cities in Nica but an anomoly and a throwback in time.........I much prefer restrictions on smoking.........

Skyrocketing motorcycle fatality rates have been remarked on around the world as a trailing indicator of rapidly rising local purchasing power. People making more money tend to spend some of it on personal transportation, and motorcycles are usually cheaper than cars. Rookie riders die more often. Regionally, I'd be curious if any correlative study has been made recently here or in Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica or Colombia, where the market growth in new motorcycle sales has been similar.

Oh, yeah, the police on the Panam are there to slow down the orgy of reckless and drunk drivers. they have little to do with crime, they are Transito, not NP,
They are a welcome change from the fishing retenes of the past because they only stop those who are obviously impared or moto drivers without helmets.

Dream on... Tje only good news is that most of the victims are young poor Nicas. Foreigners are not particularly targeted.
Do you think all those private guards, verjas, and serpentina are for decoration?

Wow! Even in Esteli? I was just there a short time ago and it seemed like the least likely place for violent crime in Nica......and the most civilized spot........friendly, clean, and prosperous........there were cops just outside of Esteli on both sides I noticed.......Chances are they caught the bad guys.........

The murder rate is low "for the region" snicker snicker, which generates the hype about how safe it is.

burglary, robbery, and armed robbery are constant. Weird one the other week, thieves attacked, beat and stabbed a motorcyclists at a local supermarket in Esteli, chucked his bike into a waiting pickup and made off. Shocking even for Esteli. They missed his kidneys so he got patched up and is recovering.

Geeze, and I thought crime wasn't big problem in Nica. So much for global reports.

Carnage is the word that best describes the roads in Nicaragua. There are currently 700 plus accidents a week with a couple dozen fatalities. They maybe the lucky ones compared to the drivers that are loosing legs and other body parts. Be careful.

Name brands at the car dealerships, weird chinese brands at storefronts.

if you drive in India you should be well qualified in Nic. Theft is a big problem. There are so many motos, mostly small ones, that they are gobbling up all the urban parking spots. Life is cheap, Along with taxis, they are involved in the majority of urban accidents.

Where is the best place to buy a motorcycle or scooter?

Motor scooters are very popular within Granada but not on the roads. Motorcycles are extremely popular everywhere and I also have one. Main reason is that gas is over $5 a gallon.
