Qatar: Making friends and racism in qatar:

No matter where you go there will be racism and I think the only thing you may experience here is that a considerable amount of lower paying jobs are held by varying Asian nationalities. I wouldn't sweat it. Finding Expat friends will be NO PROBLEM depending on the type of group you radiate towards and your age as well as what you want to do. I am 54 and a teacher, but more importantly pretty introverted- so the weekends at the hotel bars and hanging in groups is not my cup of tea. If you want friends though there are ALWAYS people doing something... You won't even have to look. Lastly, my Ex-husband was born and raised in Hong Kong, but when he came to America at 18 became a very Un-Asian, marrying American and leading a completely western lifestyle with NO Asian friends. No one cares now or then, so again, don't sweat it. Not really a lot to do here as in the UAE, but finding people to hang with will NOT be a problem. 80% of the population is Expat.

Qatar: What's a girl to Pack?:

What will your job be and where will you be working? Yes- some people DO not respect the extremely conservative dress codes, but it IS looked down on and QUITE disrespectful. If you are willing to come here and earn a living, following common dress is NOT much to ask. I wear long skirts to my ankles and long sleeved tops that at LEAST cover my forearms. Very simple and NOT at all expensive. If you want to be a fashion plate in tight clothes with short hems and sleeves do NOT work in the Middle East. And you cannot dress any way you want.

Nicaragua: Nicaragua Poverty:

Hello Tommyhawk: I am a teacher currently working in Qatar, but looking into my place to settle down and retire in the near future. I have been directed towards Nicaragua due to the extremely low cost of living but feel it would help to have someone to give me the down and dirty as well as the perks of the country. Would you mind contacting me directly? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Saudi Arabia: Possible New comer to KSA:

Hello! I am a teacher and considering applying with the oil companies to teach in Saudi in the next year. What advice can you give me for a successful interview??? I am currently working in Qatar at an International School (for NOT a great salary), to gain some Middle Eastern experience that the oil companies favor, but I also do know the KSA is much more conservative and restrictive- Especially for women. My biggest concern is transportation as women cannot drive. How do you handle the daily living restrictions and what is a reputable employer looking for in an Expat employee??? Thanks in advance!!!
