Jamaica: Moving our Family:

your move will definately be a big life change. Jamaica is a beautiful country, but remember...there ARE reasons for calling it a Third World country. You'll find many things that may agitate, but overall you'll find the atmosphere, people, and culture make up for any flaws. As far as security... I personally would choose Mandeville over Kingston. Kingston has become one of the most violent cities in the world, and although the violence usually (note the "usually") centers in certain slums in the inner city, for peace of mind... the distance is worth it to be in Mandeville. As far as activities, if you have a car, there are so many things to do and see and being the size of JA you'll be within a quarter day's drive of most great spots. Soak up the sun, talk with some locals (most of whom you'll find to be a very friendly people)...you'll soon get advice and the do's and do not's of Jamaica.

Jamaica: cheap living in jamaica:

Jamaica is a great destination for the care-free. Saying that ... I hope you're ready for an adventure! I have been living it for a year..and I will tell you first there are alot of adjustments to go through. The slower overall pace is VERY important not to overlook. Beyond that...people are great, so many things to do. The cost of living is considerably lower than the states and the U.K. as well as Canada. Food expenses are cheap - a single person can easily live on JA$1,500 in groceries a week if you can cook well- you'll find imported items like frozen foods and certained canned items can be pretty expensive, medical expenses...hmm being that many Jamaicans do not have medical insurance I would say overall bills are lower. Your average visit to the family clinic will be sometimes in the ballpark of $1,000 to $3,000 Jamaican dollars...very agreeable. I would first and foremost be prepared with a large amount of cash as well as an emergency fund. Apartments, I've witnessed, can go from JA$10,000 for unfurnished (but then again usually quite liveable and decent) to something like an in-resort apartment full furnished which can go for about an average in the mid twenty thousands a month. If possible to carry a lump sum, I'd go for the unfurnished route. Household items seem not to be too stressing on the pocket and you'll find some landlords get sticky about furniture conditions and sometimes aren't willing to replace things that need replacing. Good places to reside? It depends upon your likes. If you're looking for relaxatoin...I'd center around the north coast Montego Bay, Ocho Rios... - if you're into the "City thing" then Kingston would be your best bet- but be forewarned about the crime there. Choosing your neighborhood is very important
