In Antigua there are some pet friendly motels. I stayed in Hotel Casa Antigua with my three cats for a week until I found an apartment. And I've seen a dog with owner on a bus once.

don't worry about the work visa as they are very difficult to get and most ESL schools don't offer them. I've worked in Costa Rica for 2.5 years teaching English and I was on a tourist visa. Consider the time it takes to leave the country to renew your visa as an opportunity to visit another country. I would also suggest you talk to the school that is hiring you .
