India: Will I cause Offence???:

Hi, I have been offered a volnteer placement in Chennai and have a couple of questions if anyone is kind enough to answer. Firstly, I will be earning R6000/month, accomodation is provided, is this enough to live on? Secondly, and more importantly, I am worried about causing offence. I m an outgoing, tactile white male. Being friendly I will talk to anyone. I am worried that talking to women in some circumstances, especially socially, may cause offence. I know that this sounds ignorant, but I have lived in countries where the inly interction I ever had was with men. I felt like I had missed out on so much. Any advice on this matter would be very much appriciated. I would hate my ignorance to be the cause of someone elses distress. Thanks, Rem
