We own two marinas in Michigan. My background is in Mechanical Engineering in the oilfield. In 2000 we made the move to full time running our marinas. We work seven days a week from Mid April to Mid November. We started going to Belize about 8 years ago and fell in love with the place. We now own property on the ocean in the area of Sittee River just south of Hopkins. We are building and we will start to spend the entire winter down there. Scuba Diving and Fishing keep us busy, but we love everything else about the place. I am one of the few people who has driven from the US thru Mexico to Belize. I have made the trip six and soon to be seven times. Down and Back!

Belize: places to buy in Belize:

Simple! Come here for two weeks! Spent about four days in the main areas. Placecia, Hopkins, San Ignacio, San Pedro, Corozal. Check them all out! Then pick one you seem to like the best. Come back for and extended visit, Maybe a month or two. This will give you a better idea of what it is really like to live here. You can find rentals on VRBO.com or make sure you look for them while you are here the first time. Then and only then do you consider buying here!!!!! We came for eight years before we bought and built our house. If it matters we chose Hopkins / Sittee Point area. We liked the close proximity to the mountains and the reef. Plus it was a little slower pace than Placencia. But again that was our personal taste, your could be very different.

Belize: Hopkins:

Well I live here in the Hopkins area for four months every winter. I love it here and feel very safe. American that has a good opinion of Belize!

What area? If you are anywhere near Hopkins. Darren Ramieriez built ours. He even handle the permits while we were out of the country

My lesson from that same trip. Don't tow a trailer. Three trips with a trailer and two I had problems. In the same area of MEXICO

Belize: Need tips for 2nd trip down:

I would come down to the Hopkin's and Sittee River area. It is up and coming. It is close to the main road, and the reef. It very quickly became our first choice.

There is one called Latitude Apartments. They are nice also.

I have bought from CPC in Hopkins. I personally had Mike, the owner. But John Stewart is from Penn. and has been living there for a few years now. I have rented from him. And Danie has helped a lot of people I know. We will be in Hopkins by Dec 5th, look me up I will give it to you straight over a beer. Belize: Commuting to the US:

Two years ago they had a direct flight from O'Hare to Belize City. I haven't check lately. That would make it easy! I don't think Belize can tax you on that. What part of Belize would you be flying out of. Placencia or San Pedro would be the easiest.
