Advice for New Expats

If thinking or even considering of moving to the Philippines, do not do so unless or until you have made enough trips here to be very sure this really is the place you want to live. Even then leave yourself a financial way out if worse comes to worse.

I would love to live in...

I'm already here-The Philippines

Philippines: 13a Visa:

It would be wise to do anything there that can be done. I would first go to or call the Philippine embassy in your area to get solid information and answers. I would still acquire all requirements there so that you can apply for your visa when you arrive here if need be. Otherwise you may have to return to Calif for things like the police clearance etc. Hopefully there will be other that have done this very thing and can supply you with better and more complete information. A word of caution here. If you buy your home in the Philippines now and do not have your wife's family to stay in it, you may find it is occupied by squatters when you arrive. Here you can not just have the police throw them out or in jail. Believe it or not squatters have rights and you would have to pay them to leave. Good Luck Nephi

Philippines: Sending snail-mail via the Internet?:

Zenweasel, That is the type service that I have never heard of. Hopefully you'll get the needed information--if it exists. Short of that, you can rent a PO Box and the closest VFW post here in the country. Mail travels by courier to and from Manila and then directly out of the country. Very safe that way. If you are retired US military, you get access a regular US Mail PO Box at any VFW post as well. That mail travels both directions as US Mail. Regards Jet Lag

Philippines: Merry Christmas Expats:

Merry Christmas to all also from us at our home in the islands. Enjoy the Christmas Holidays and remember the reason for the season. Be safe on the roads too. Very Best Holiday Greetings, Nephi & Family

Philippines: "It is not my job" = Major Frustration:

Hi Flopie133, You are absolutely right about being thankful for water and electric service. As foreign expats here these are things we take for granted in our home countries. Even after living here for many years now it still drives be nuts when they have an all day (12 hour) power outage for some kind of repairs. I/we end up having to use one of those hourly motels that is made for cheating husbands so that we have power and aircon. Even then, it's not too bad cause the kids have fun making it an outing and eat meals at Jollibee etc all day long. We have a bridge at the edge of our town that just about washed out 14 months ago. They won't spend the money to fix the thing and just fill in the missing part with dirt. Yet, less than 500 feet from there they spend a fortune to build a brand new, two story Barangay Hall complete with aircon and porcelain tiles on the floors and not even one jail cell in the building. Go figure!?!?!! Living here you really need to have AND KEEP a sense of humor or the decision making or judgment--or lack of it would drive you into the funny farm... Merry Christmas everyone. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays. Best Regards, Nephi

Philippines: Long term stay / perpetual tourism:

Bonkers, The only place in these islands (that I know of ) that meets all your needs, including public transit, is Subic Bay Freeport. They truly have it all. They even have a new medical center but not sure of the quality of care. Quality medical care here can be hard to find. It ranges from very few that are excellent, down to the fact that most of them can be deadly adventurism. Here's a link to the Subic Chamber of Commerce for a look-see. Best of luck, Nephi.. Philippines: Senior Citizen Discount?:

Larry, It's important to remember where we are. Most workers in most businesses have little concept of law and couldn't care less even if they did. The govt agency that issues the card to a foreigner is the party in the wrong but any business will accept for use without question. There is usually no problem in getting a card and never a problem in using it. The problem can happen if someone, anyone knows the law and decides to make a phone call. This govt will do anything possible to nail a foreigner on any legal issue where they would let a local off. There are always risks in life. You only need to decide if using the senior card is worth the risk for the small savings it brings. Regards, Nephi

Philippines: Senior Citizen Discount?:

There are benefits as stated for those 60 and older. There are many foreign expats that have managed to get a senior card and are using it. However, reading the law in regards to it, foreigners are not permitted the privilege. However, expats are able to buy into and use Philhealth medial hospitalization insurance. Regards Nephi

Philippines: Need advice: where to live in the Philippines:

Hi Juliasolete, You'll surly get a lot of replies with many ideas on places and areas. If you are a first timer coming to the Philippines, I'd first remind you that this is or can be a dangerous 3rd world country to just drop in on and stay. That said and for those reasons, I'd suggest an area outside of but close to the old US Navy base in Subic Bay on Luzon Island. Good area with complete infastructure on base that is hard to find anywhere else. Borcay is simply to expensive when Subic offers more for far less. Check out their chamber of commerce at the link at the end of my post. Good luck and enjoy the Philippines. Regards, Nephi.. Link>>> http://sbfcc.com/

Philippines: negative v positive:

Seems to me that anyone that reads this and other threads and is thinking straight, would leave the bar girls in the bar. There are many ways to enjoy yourself in the Philippines without risking life and limb and the 3rd leg!

Philippines: Why do we become Expats:

I made my first trip here to the Philippines in 1996 just to see what was here. I wasn't looking but ended up finding a wonder woman. We only met in person two times in one day back then. After that we visited by phone and emails for 7 years before getting married. I'm retired on a pension and my wife is still working a full time job that she loves. We decided to live here in the islands so that we could not only enjoy the tropics but to be close to her family as well. Now we have four wonderful daughters that we are raising and I would not change a thing--except if I could have found my wife years earlier. We are here to stay. Regards, Nephi
