Italy: Shipping Car to Italy:
Hi fgalotti,
There is a very good, informative forum on' Expats in Italy.com'.
Lots of folks having gone thru just about everything getting to and living in Italy.
Good luck, Ginger
Italy: Overseas Moving Companies:
widden39- when I moved from Calif. to the Veneto 5years ago, a 20 ft container cost $7000, but I got rid of a lot of stuff before I left. The process starts on the internet. You find the port city nearest you and start asking for shipping companys, you specify that you are shipping 'household goods' and start asking for bids--- there are big price differences-- BEWARE--cheaper's not always better! If there is a military base near you find out who their international carriers are. PS Don't pack anything yourself, professionals really do know best.
Argentina: bad move:
Dear bluesky, I empathize with you whole heartedly, similar happened to me in Italy, only maybe not in too bad a financial crunch. The locals only try to take advantage no matter how good you are to them. Best of luck to you. bardigiana
Italy: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO LIVE IN YOUR ITALIAN TOWN:
to ocelle and canicassio, I don't know if I'ld put all the blame on Berlusconi, this has been to Americas advantage, to keep the money in the states, so many A$ were buying goods all over the world, factories moving overseas, unemployment rates up - its been good for America, unfortunatly-bad for us. I know I haven't gone anywhere in a year, but I'm going this weekend, to hell with enel! In my area they depend a lot on $'s, this is the largest gold producing area in Italy also many fur factories and they're all hurting. But I also blame the EU, the governments made no effort to put a moratorium on price increases by wholesalers and retailers when they changed over to the euro.
Italy: nee advice, moving our family of ten to Verona:
Dear motherofeight, I'm another mom who lives in the Vicenza area. We came 4 yrs ago. My son is now 14 and started Italian school when he was 10 without a word of Italian. I honestly have to say he suffered a lot at the beginning, but he had no other brothers or sisters to keep him company-you're llucky in that regard(my other kids are grown and in the states) Very small kids catch on quickly and preschools are inexpensive and good and there's usually one very close to where you live. We have access to the army base near here altho I'm now retired. I must say I'm really glad to see some people hooking up and being helpful to each other. One other word, the Euro has really done a number on us living on the dollar are you aware that you will be losing almost 30% off the dollar? Hopefully your husband has negotiated a good cost of living allowance.
Italy: Looking for fellow Americans:
to the latest postings of people looking for other Americans or groups in n.Italy, I've been here 4 yrs and it's pretty poor pickins. The closest I've seen is a womens group in Milano. Maybe someone needs to start one. I know that there are quite a few of us in Padova. It all depends on what your needs are, age bracket, interests etc. I know sometimes I just need to vent or talk slang and not have to think of the appropriate translation. bardigiana
Italy: Americans Living in Italy - How did you do it?:
Janeth, I moved with a cat 5 yrs ago he was in the cabin with us, other than he molted about a half a pound of hair from the stress. Your vet will have all the pertinant info, requirments etc. A friend just moved to Peru from Italy with 4 cats, they all arrived safely.
Italy: Freelance Web Developer in Italy:
dear ocelle, you give really good advice, unfortunatly- the cold hard truth! The price of a decent capppucino is about the only thing that hasn't doubled and tripled! But don't you have telecom 'alice' where you are? 36 eu, flat rate a month. Not cheap but much better than paying long distance, they also have wireless satelite in my town, but they want 1500eu to put up the antenna + 90eu/mo, but one guy put up the money for the antenna then hooked everybody up in his apt.building and was charging them 10eu/mo., the company doesn't care how many just as long as they get their 90. ahhh yes, the cost of living- well I know I'm putting out a h... of a lot more than I was 2 yrs ago and the prices keep going up! I don't know how regular Itls do it cause they sure don't make the salaries they do in the states. Also do you know they charge you more when they hear you're not local? Best wishes, B
