Spain: Buying Property in Costa del Sol-NOW:
Greetings all,
Well I'm now at the point where I'm prepared to buy a condo property somewhere around Benalmadena to Fuengirola. I'm from Canada so enjoying a comfortable but not too hot place with lots of culture is ideal for me. I'm expecting to pick a place either this May or next if I don't like what I see...and I've been working with an agent in Spain from Dream Homes based in Fuengirola.
It will be my winter place and I'm prepared to spend between 100-125k Euros for a 2-bedroom a kilometre from the beach with a view and balcony. I've seen many.
One thing I can't seem to get a clear answer on the type of visa I require for only 5-7 months a year, and the conditions tied to it.
I'm not rich enough to purchase the "golden visa" requiring a home purchase of Euro 500,000,
Does anyone have information on the requirements for such a visa. I think I read that one must show an account that has at least Euro 25,000 annually. That would not be a problem.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Spain: retiring in Spain:
I will be retiring to Spain in a few years from Canada. Spaniards are wonderful people with no particular grudge towards North Americans (I'm from Canada). Just keep in mind that there are over a million expats living in Spain, particularly in the Costa del Sol area, who have set up a bit of an alternative Spain within Spain, so it's always easy to find people that you relate to who are doing what you want to do.
I've also been coming to Spain every year for the past five. It sounds like you would have enough money to retire without much effort to be cautious with your finances. It does seem that you are better to rent, play it by ear for a few years, rather than buy.
If you are looking for quiet, than probably stay away from Costa del Sol, unless to head for the hills to live, which is cheaper. I can't say much about places not on the coast but there are quite a few places on the sea, near the sea or a far distance from the sea that are definitely quiet but usually without many ex-pats living there. But since you probably speak Spanish, that shouldn't be an issue to communicate. The area between Malaga and Valencia offers some great communities that are beautiful, cheaper, and quiet. I attached a link that you may want to explore to see what is out there to rent or buy. There are so many more links that you could just google "real estate rent spain" and just take your pick of web links.

Spain: Renting my retirement property:
I plan on purchasing an apartment in Costa del Sol in a few year and retire there for 6 months a year.
I also plan on applying for a resident's (only) visa and rent it out during the peak tourist season while I return to Canada.
I suddenly donned on me that legally I can't rent it as it may be considered income. Paying taxes is not an issue.
Does anyone have any insight to offer on this issue? Much appreciated...
Spain: Retire in Spain, how much per month?:
I'm not exactly sure where I read that the amount you must show in your bank account but I thing it's about 1,000 euros a month times 12 which makes it 12,000 a year. Someone will probably correct me.
Spain: Real Estate Broker:
Having finally started the process of purchasing a property in the Costa del Sol area, I have somewhat hooked into an English speaking broker named "Your Dream Home". So far, everything seems legitimate. I've been in contact with them for almost two years and have visited them and the area the last two years. I also just made one of their lawyers power of attorney in case I need to buy quickly over the next year or so, to get something I think I would like.
My question is, does anyone know of them? Are they trustworthy?
As a Canadian, they said I shouldn't have a problem buying property (I can pay cash without mortgage) as long as I have a number and bank account, which I can now do with a lawyer fairly efficiently. We even went to an Notary Office to empower the lawyer, a woman named Clara de-saz Orozca. Am I okay with this? I can cancel the POA anytime without money being transacted.
Spain: considering movingg to Costa del Sol:
Greetings!
I'm a Canadian considering Spain as my retirement home in a few years.
I will be re-visiting the area in May and would like to check out a few properties in or near Malaga.
Does anyone know of a trusted real estate agent that I could contact?
I'm looking at properties around $100,000US.
Any direction would be greatly considered.
Cheers
M
