Cyprus: Moving to cyprus:

Hi, in reply to your post, this is a very big subject and I am sure you will have many many questions. If you wish, you can contact me directly and I will answer as many of your queries as possible. I have had property on the island for 20 years and lived here as a resident for 7 years. you will find my e mail on the profile page. Regards Howard

Cyprus: "My Account" button:

Hi gracie06, I think the topic is "how to create a new e mail address"...... Basically, if a hotmail account is wanted then it is easy. Just open up MSN or search hotmail and anyone can create a new web address. Same for Google..just search and open a google account. If however you want something like @cytanet.com.cy you will have to contact Cytanet who will set it up for you. Regards H (I am pretty sure this is how to do it.)

Cyprus: land grab:

Land grab is not a problem in Cyprus but through your lawyer (get your own, not one nominated by a developer) they will check that the deeds will be available and also register your contract with the Land Registry within 30 days of signing. This guarantees you that land/property. Be aware though, that deeds on a development do not start to be issued until the whole development is finished. At the moment it is 3/4 years to get the deeds from this point. However, should you wish to sell prior, you can as long as you have the "Certificate of Approval" which is issued after the house is completed. If you wish to know an excellent lawyer in the Paphos area feel free to contact me. If you are on an inspection tour then take your time and negotiate hard. Many agents are on high commissions which reflect back when you think about resale. Also remember to use a currency specialist such as HiFX to move your money. Much cheaper than the banks and less hassle. H

Cyprus: investments/jobs in paphos:

Hi, In order of your questions: you can ship the car over from the Uk subject to certain age restrictions (the car not you). You will have to re register the car, yes. It will then be on a Cyprus number plate. There is no car/passenger ferry to Cyprus. By the time you have messed about getting the car and yourselves to Greece and put the car on a ferry and fly over yourselves from there you may as well just ship the car from the UK. To drive in Cyprus is no problem on your UK issued licence. However by law you have to exchange this licence if you are a resident for more than 6 months of a year. just make sure you keep your Uk licence or at the least a good copy. Re jobs.......as Uk/EC citizens, you can work here without problem . With your experience you may well get work particularly if you speak languages. Subject to the amount of your capital you may need a financial advisor buyt any amounts in excess of C£100,000 will attract approx 5% less a defense tax of 10%. There is a new EU law that states you can keep money in the UK or elsewhere but you must fill in forms at your Uk bank to avoid excessive tax deductions in the coutry of origin. to save money, consider other areas other than Paphos as property prices are much lower in other areas, for example Limassol. Nice area close to town...3 bed...C£129000 for 170 sq metres. Just ask I can pass on the phone number and he is a very good english builder. Excellent reputation. Another way of using your money is by investment property...the above mentioned houses are in an area where some of my friends let a similar house and achieve C£650 per month rental income. Plus they bought off plan and the house is currently worth over C£140,000. they have now bought one at C£129000 from this developer to live in. I keep a Uk account at Barclays in the Uk. My pension is paid into that account and I then transfer the money to my Cyprus sterling account by personal cheque. Takes 3 weeks but virtually no charges. I do not keep any deposits in the Uk. With regard to HSBC, I do not think they have actual branches but they seem to have some tie up with my bank here...Laiki Bank. (was called Cyprus Popular Bank) Laiki means popular. Good luck hope you make it here. H

Cyprus: US Citizen inquiring about relocating to Cyprus:

i reply to your question, most of the points have been answered by a previous reply. However, I must comment upon the "Don't buy off plan comments". The sender is quite correct that many builder/developers deliver late....but this is mainly the case when buying an apartment, as the developer looks to sell as many apartments as possible before commencing the build. Villas and houses tend to be better. Most importantly....do not use the developers lawyer. They are often related....so you can imagine who the lawyer will support. For totally unbiased advice I recommend www.nickskeltonhomes.com The site is run by my son and he is English but based in Cyprus. You will find all the local information you require plus he will welcome an e mail or call/fax. Good luck. It is a great place to live, especially if you like the sun. There are also many Americans already here.
