Uruguay: Beds and curtains:

the biggest bed i have in my house is a double, cuz thats what comes up used. ( i always had a king, back in the U.s. ) But i snag ANY size all cotton sheets when i can get them, since they are rare in Uruguay. And so i have a set of King ( whatever they call a king, it swamps my double beds, but i havent the heart to cut this lovely high thread count cotton down! - and the bottom is easy to tuck under ) that I got at the big linen chain store here ( I cant remember the name , but there's one almost every block all over the country?! ) It was on a clearance table, so maybe they special ordered it for someone with an American King. If not , and it is something they normally carry, thats who has the bigger sheets. ( Tiendo Montevideo? )

Uruguay: Jewish in Uruguay:

the bombing of the jewish center in buenos aires was in 1994, over 85 people were killed, many children. It happened on july 18th. which is one of the reasons that every town in south america has a calle 18 de Julio, in solidarity.

Uruguay: How about renting in Minas?:

Eco-friendly stay in Quiet Mountain Town Quiet double room for rent with lots of storage, a private balcony and sunset view of the mountains of Minas. Minas is a charming and friendly town where nature and horse-back riding is easily accessible. The town also hosts a well-used central plaza dating back to the 19th century and a great public library. I am just off the town square and 4 blocks from the bus station. I have Bikes available for you to explore. Downstairs hosts a large kitchen and dining room as well as a large living room. It’s a breezy and sunny home in Spanish style with a great azotea-courtyard. There are four bedrooms so you will find the home has a lot more space and privacy than many in Uruguay. I like cooking vegetarian and gluten-free food and doing arts and crafts so the house is well stocked for creative-types! There are two bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs and the Frida Kahlo room has a private bathroom. We are pet friendly, the house has one dog and one cat. Photos: http://www.martitabackpackerhostel.com/#!gallery-of-minas-uruguay/c1tsl The upstairs room, the "Sunset"" room with balcony is $ 390. usd per month including utilities, or $150. usd per week including utilities, for a shorter stay. ( 28. usd a night ). There is no deposit ( 50. usd surcharge for second person in the room ). Email mjferriesmcgrew@gmail.com

Uruguay: MUSEOS EN LA NOCHE:

Tomorrow nite, Dec. 9th, most of the museums in the whole country are offering special programs, in the evening, which include things like live music, snacks, and everything is free. They do this every year and do a great job. Last year, here in Minas, the cultural museum/Lavalleja's home also showed a video all about the local archeological site, Valle del Hilo de la Vida. And the windmill museo allowed people to cimb up the ( rickety ) stairs to see the night view ( usually open only during the day ). I'm not sure what they have cooked up for this year, but I know it will be great ( the staff are fun - they dress up like Lavalleja family members on his birthday... ) It starts at 21:30 hours here, but check with your local museos. ( and the best museum in town is Horatio cho cho's MUSEUM OF MINIATURAS but i dont know what he is offering ....... )

Uruguay: Fireworks:

last year, in Minas, Uruguay ( a small city in the interior ) we had lots of firecrackers and fireworks lit off on xmas eve. , and new years eve. ( from midnight until people ran out, which was about an hour later ) with only a few tiny practice occurances in the days leading up to the holidays. I sense there would be more, but money is tight?

Uruguay: Cheese starter cultures & supplies?:

there is a cheese museum over near colonia, and a town, new switzerland is the translation, but i cant remember how to say it. I would try either of those, if you dont find what you are looking for in m.v.

Uruguay: lavadora:

I like my PHILCO that i bought here in URuguay. i have used it one to 2 times a day for a year, and it is still going strong, but that's only one year. ( i usually buy 2nd hand , but since i have to do so much laundry, i decided to go new ) It sort of bothered me , at the begining, that so much of the machine is PLASTIC, but maybe thats the way they make them these days, and i guess it doesnt rust that way. I cant speak to any of the specs, i bought it cuz that was the biggest one that would fit in the one space i could cram it into my garaje ( people before had their machine outside, which i didnt want to do ) and it was what the store that gives a discount on Saturdays ( Daniel Hogar ) - they seem to only sell Philco, as far as their washing machine selection, but everything else i have bought from them ( water heaters, small appliances ) has been great, so i am assuming there is good reason why they carry that brand.

Uruguay: Renting a Cabaña:

I met Annmarie , since we both live in/near Minas. As so often is the case, she heard me speaking English in the El Dorado grocery store, so introduced herself. She is "good people" - but she is NOT Uruguayo, she is German, so that may be one of the reasons she is willing to rent to you, long term, thru the high season. It has been my experience - going on my 3rd year here - that an Uruguayan landlord would NOT consider taking less than the going tourist rate of about 4x ( plus! ) the non high season rate during the months of January and February. I am pointing this out becuz, your strategy , wouldnt work for a whole year, in the beach areas. Uruguayan landlords out in Lavallaja , and probably other non beach areas, are open to negotiations. I know this becuz i am renting a property for my hostel that WAS ( is ) for sale - and the realtor was able to get the landlord interested in renting, ( and i am taking a chance, not sure WHAT happens to my 2 year lease if someone does want to buy the building... ) I know people who have places in Pirapolis , for example, who have to move out for 3 mos., during high season, then they can have the place again after the Argentinian/Brazilian tourists leave - which can be mighty inconvenient if you have animals, a garden, or stuff. Just thought i should mention that, since a lot of the threads lately have been from people who just want to visit Uruguay during high season....

Uruguay: Driving fines increase for 86 driving infractions:

There is definately a lack of driving etiquette here in Uruguay, not that i haven't seen such in other cities and countries that i have lived in. But I have to say, as a pedestrian who walks with a cane, crossing even slow traffic streets can be dicey - I have almost been mowed over several times now. A friend of mine hit a motorcyclist with her car because she didnt see him, as he was passing her on the RIGHT hand of the road, while she was making a right turn ( and yes, her turn signal was on ) . Unfortunately , the high stats are alot more agression driven than lack of modern cars, in my opinion.
