About cherylb

I am a Native Texan, born and raised. Worked until I quit my job to move to Uruguay. I am a single mother with a grown son. I am 54 years old and my son is 30. We moved the whole family to Uruguay in January 2016. We are in the process of purchasing a small farm and house, called a 'campo' (if you didn't know but some will) :) I worked for the Port of Houston Authority for over 26 years before that too many places. I am a freelancer now. I help take care of my fathers day to day activities, appointments and whatever else I can assist him with. I will be receiving a certificate from an online course for teaching English as a foreign language. I do not have any plans for teaching at this moment but if anyone needs help or has questions, I will be glad to help out. I have three dachshunds, Scooter, Boots and Frisky. We hope to have more animals on our farm one day but first things first. We have to own it first!! Until next time with an update! Thanks and have a great day ;)

Advice for New Expats

We stayed in Montevideo for about a month before we started the purchase process. We should have taken longer to decide but we didn't we want to start the process as soon as we could. We purchased our farm 'campo' in Minas. About 115 Km East of Montevideo. We live in a rural area of Minas and we have some fantastic views of mountains, valleys, farm land and nature. We are in process of a few DIY projects here on the property. This has been a fantastic ride and we are not through. Stay tuned!! ;)

I would love to live in...

I am here....I picked Uruguay.

Uruguay: Real estate offers:

Hello, We used Focus to find a chacra (campo) for us and we are loving Minas!! I haven't seen that many houses with A/C but I am sure there are some. As far as the neighborhoods, they all seems very pleasant but haven't been to them all. We met a lady that has cabanas for rent off of Ruta 12, her name is AnneMarie (she heard my sister and I talking and started a conversation with us, very nice lady).....I could only find her FB page and maybe she can help with the rental for a month or two. I hope this helps!! :) https://www.facebook.com/annemarie.fleischmann/about (Auf dem Campo) Or how about a Hostel in Minas and I believe her name is Martha (met her on Facebook).... http://www.martitabackpackerhostel.com/ I will be happy to help, if I can and Focus helped us along the way!! Thanks and good luck :)

Uruguay: Bringing in golf cart-like vehicles or parts?:

Hello, I am not sure about golf cart type vehicles or parts but I do know that you can bring lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc. in the container. That is how we got ours down here. We were told to empty out the gas and oil and it was a done deal. Hope that helps, but I am sure that your moving company will let you know, ours did :) Take care.

Uruguay: Renting a Cabaña:

Hi, I have also met Annemarie in the grocery store in Minas. She heard my sister ask me a question in English and she said Hi to us and we began a conversation....everyone in the store was freaking out, including my sister and myself. We met her and her daughter and grand baby, they are very nice and helpful to use. I keep Annemarie on my mind as a wonderful human being here in Minas. She was very polite to us and I want to go visit her very soon. We have just completed the purchase of our chacra in Minas off of Ruta 8. We are so happy to be here and meet some wonderful and helpful people here. She will be a great host and I wish you all the best with your visit here. I don't know too much about the area just yet but I would take the advise from the other members. Take care and God bless. Bye for now!!

Uruguay: 1 month in Uruguay with young kids:

Hello, We (family of 5) used airbnb.com to book our 1 month in an apartment in Montevideo. I am sure you will be able to find accommodations for your family. Have fun and be safe. Oh, and enjoy!! :) We love it here and have bough a small farm. Chau

Uruguay: with how much USA$ you can get inside UYU?:

Hello, There was 5 of us traveling to Uruguay and we each brought in $10k each plus I had my jewelry in my purse. We did not have to declare anything but we used some of it to open a bank account. Other than that we have been using what we have to buy things and groceries. We have already purchased a house and a truck with funds that was transferred here. This was in January and it might have changed by now. So, good luck and be safe. :)

Uruguay: Moving Company reccomendations:

Hello, We arrived in Montevideo back in January. Our stuff arrived in February 2016. We used a company in the USA called Schumacher Cargo Logistics and once the container arrived here, we used a company recommended by the shipping company called Autogiro (Campos Hnos. & Cia, Ltda. (Maria Campos). Both companies where fantastic to us. So helpful and pleasant. Good luck!! Regards ;)

Uruguay: Gluten free/vegan/vegetarian in URuguay:

Hi McGrew, Good reading and thanks. My family and I just moved to Uruguay. My son is a vegetarian and the rest of us are trying to watch what we eat but not vegetarian just yet. I just wanted to introduce myself and to say that we are also in Minas. We live off of Ruta 8 by the Salus plant. We have been able to find almost everything needed here and can't wait to explore more of Minas. We have been here for about 6 months total. Thanks for all the information and can't wait for more!!
