Colombia: International Trip Cancelation / Interuption insurance for Colombian Expats:

I usually don't buy, but recently, with my parents getting older and in/out of hospitals more frequently, I have started to purchase travel insurance. I go to www.squaremouth.com to compare and purchase. It's an excellent service. Fortunately, never had to cash in. Not sure it's validity in Canada...

Colombia: Thinking of moving to Colombia:

Adam, No use in going to Colombia to plant and eat non GMO...it's to late. I have some land that we lease to a local farmer, and everything is modified, chemically sprayed, etc. It's the only way they can compete. He tried to plant organic, and lost his shirt. Maybe you can do this to live off of yourself, but not much luck finding it. You'll also have to put up with a lot of theft. He's constantly mending fences and calling the police to no avail. Security will be a BIG issue, not for the land/product, but for yourself. When I go visit, we don't tell anyone that I'm going to be there. There was another gentlemen on this forum that was held at gunpoint and tied up while they searched his home. He was lucky. 2 hectares and you'll need a gas driven tiller. Quite expensive and they make their own chemtrails. Obesity in the US is more to do with it becoming a more sedentary lifestyle. It's becoming the same in Asia and S. America too. I was in China 15 years ago for a while, and returned about 3 years ago for a stint. Obesity has exploded and it has more to do with lifestyle and bringing more people out of poverty (ability to feed themselves and have 'down' time)...just like in the Western world. I can understand some concern over what we put in our bodies...but you lost the whole conversation when you mentioned Chemtrails. How are you getting to Colombia without making some? Your just contributing more. Anyone who believes the Chemtrail conspiracy theory is a complete nut job.

Colombia: Colombian Boyfriend:

As previously mentioned, it is in line with the culture to be saying these 'sweet nothings'. They will tell the next girlfriend the same thing after one month...or to the girl they are trying to pick up. ...and same goes for Latinas finding a man. ...and because they are so use to saying, and hearing, these 'kind' words....they don't have the same deep heartfelt meaning that they may in the US or Europe. ...do be careful.

Colombia: no more sim card swaps?:

A very minor inconvenience....

Colombia: Buying Land:

Check your private messages... Finding the right finca will take a long time. I made 3-4 trips before finding what we wanted. My first trip we realized that prices were 20-40% high once they saw me, so my Colombian wife went looking and created short lists for me to look at when I returned. Plan to look at 30-40 places. Risaralda is a big state, so you might want to narrow it done a bit too. You mentioned fruit trees: bananas and Plantain are N and E of Pereira, The area around Pereira is the 'coffee region', S and W of Pereira are pineapple, oranges and lemons. Mango and Papaya just about everywhere. Plan on spending a lot of time....

Colombia: Armenia English speaking lawyer:

My brother in law works in a real estate law office in Armenia. He doesn't speak English, but I think the lawyer there does. I'll PM you with the info...

Colombia: French tutor for DELF?:

Where are you located? Try looking for alliance Francaise (Alianza Frencesa in Spanish) school. It is for grade school children, but they might be able to help. I know there is one in Pereira, and I think in Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Cartegena.

Colombia: Silence?:

Did everyone go silent all at once?

Colombia: US restrictions begin on Colombian visas:

In fact, many of our problems can be lessened by opening our borders. *False Narratives* Illegal immigrants reduce labor costs, especially in jobs which few Americans are willing to do. This allows companies to grow, creating more positions which Americans are interested in filling. *This reduces the labor costs for ALL, not just the lower paying jobs. Around 20% of white high school grads are unemployed, 30% for hispanics and 50% for African Americans. There are a lot of people willing to work. (I got those numbers from Bernie Sanders) While not illegal, the H1B Visa program reduces labor costs. Companies claim they can't find the talent in the US, so they bring in foreign labor at 1/2 the cost, which reduces the pay of those here...but also reduces the employment rate too* Accepting refugees deprives terrorist groups of the resource they most need, disaffected people. Who is more likely to become radicalized? A 10 year old Syrian boy sitting in a theater watching the latest Pixar film, or a 10 year old Syrian boy watching a US drone blow up his best friend and his entire family? *This is a false narrative. The number of refugees allowed into the country has been an average of 50k/yr for the last 15 years...and it's still the same. The current administration has only asked for more extreme vetting...no more. 50K/yr isn't enough? Ok....what is the number? Let's say...70K. Well...what about the 70,001st refugee? Why not accept him/her? Let's say...100K. Well...what about the 100,001st refugee? Why not accept him/her? Anytime a limit is placed, the same heartfelt, tear jerk response is permitted.* If you're supporting the isolationist policies the current administration is pursuing and have a Colombian wife, girlfriend or friend you have my pity. You have chosen a policy of hate over the lives of the people you claim to love. *those isolationist policies are the same policies have been in affect for decades. Don't confuse enforcement of current laws as a policy of hate. Obama deported more illegals than any president before him. Where was the outrage? He blocked green card and visa holders for 6 months in 2011...where was the outrage? Do you lock the doors of your house? I do....I do it not because of what I feel for the people outside. It's because I love the people inside.*
