India: Moving to Mumbai in May:

Hello. My husband and I (Black Americans) are moving to Mumbai in the Spring. He works for the US Embassy. We previously lived in China, so we have expat experience. We will live in a serviced apartment in Mumbai. I've read alot about India but still don't feel that I have a good grasp of the culture, what I should bring, etc. Any advice? What to bring? Should we hire household help? What is it really like during monsoon season? Do I have to barter for goods like in China? Know any good websites? Any advice would be sincerely appreciated. Many thanks!

China: Women's expat associations in Beijing:

We lived in Beijing while my husband worked for the US government. Check out the American Club at AMERICAN CLUB OF BEIJING Beijing, China. Phone: 6437-6743. You could also stop in at the US Embassy where you may get some leads.

Japan: Japan tax benefits:

My husband and I lived in China for a year and here is how the tax situation worked for us: You must stay outside the U.S. for 330 consecutive days in order to reap the tax benefit. The first $80,000 that you make is tax-free. The rest is taxable at your appropriate tax bracket. Check the IRS regulations at www.irs.gov. Hope this helps.

China: Another ... moving to Beijing thread!:

Hello, I hope the response is not too late. My husband and I lived in Beijing for a year while he worked for the US government. We were not married when I first arrived. We did live together for 30 days and then got married in Beijing. We got all of our information from the US embassy so I'm pretty confident that it is accurate. An American citizen who is not sponsored by an employer can stay in China for 30 days on the initial tourist Visa. BEFORE the 30 days expire you must go to Chinese authorities and request an extension (this is usually granted with no hassle but dont wait until the last minute)- this can be granted for up to 90 days and then your girlfriend will have to leave the country. As for living together being illegal, the Chinese don't do it but we did not have any problems. If you live among the Chinese, just dont tell people you are not married. We lived in a serviced apartment where most tenants are not locals. Regarding satellite TV, it depends on where you live. We lived in Chaoyang district and had lots of satellite channels.
