New Zealand: Which city is the best place to live in for work and for a first time move to New Zealand North Island?:
New Plymouth is not near Auckland. Sorry. Towns near Auckland - Warkworth, Te Kauwhata, Helensville. They are one hour's drive from Auckland City.
If you really want to be near Auckland then consider the North Shore in Auckland - close to beaches & easy commute to the city. Devonport, Takapuna, Milford, Albany are the main town Centres on the North Shore. Good Luck!
New Zealand: 1 year working holiday advice:
Hi James
So many questions, not sure I can answer all of them. Auckland or Wellington will be your two best bets when it comes to finding work in the theatre or arts sectors, Both cities offer plentiful hospitality sector jobs. Seek.co.nz might be worth checking out for potential jobs / contacts in the arts sector. For hospitality jobs, word of mouth and/or personally visiting the places you might like to work & ask for a job might be the fastest & most direct route to success. Your one year working holiday visa is the passport to getting any work in NZ so be sure to be upfront about your legal work status when job hunting. You would be advised to arrive in NZ first and then seek out accommodation, In Auckland you might consider house=share options, offering private, furnished bedrooms and shared living / bathroom / kitchen facilities, almost always located in central auckland suburbs. This might be a good short term option for you. www.walkerweir.co.nz are small & professional property rental group I can recommend. They have house share rentals & private apartments / homes for rent. nzherald.co.nz or www.trademe.co.nz are good sites for hunting rental accommodation that you might like to check out. Good luck & enjoy your year down in NZ.
New Zealand: Livable wage?:
Take a good warm jacket & your thermals as well if you're looking at Dunedin. Home insulation is only a new concept in NZ so you'll find it much colder & more expensive to survive the winter months than in the US. Much more expensive! However, it's a great little city and the best university in NZ so I'm sure it will work out. $55,000 is below average annual salary in NZ. Housing, electricity/gas, and food will be your three major expenses and will gobble up much of your income - particularly in the winter months. Having recently visited NZ after 18 months living in europe we were shocked at the cost of food. Be prepared. But we still love it in NZ - it's home for us. Good luck with your decision-making.
