Kuwait: cost of living 8730 KD?:

8730 sounds like it should be fine. Most teachers at my school earn around that figure (727 KD/month- as we say the monthly amount here). Especially with accomodations included. As far as rental cars go, I pay 85 kd/mo with AutoLease and I have a small four door car. This is with a discount, which they'll give you if you tell them you're a teacher. Other rental car companys lease sedans for 90 and up. If you want a fancy car then you'll pay more but I quite like my little car; it's great for getting out of some sticky traffic situations. No, it's not as affordable as other countries but Kuwait can be quite expensive and the salary is generally higher to match that. British Schoolof Kuwait (BSK) has some great after-school and weekend classes that are open to anyone (kids, adults) who are coming from other schools, too. Check their website at bsk.edu.kw for more info on such classes. Good social outlet for kids, too. As for Starbucks prices, I wouldn't know. In Salmiya, where Starbucks is, you'll find a half dozen other cafes that I prefer more. I wouldn't worry about those coffee costs. If you like to read, bring a bunch of paperbacks because they're expensive here. There's also an affordable and diverse (but small) used book store in Kuwait City. If you'd like I could pass that info along. Good luck!

Kuwait: Housing in Kuwait?:

I'll be moving out of my flat in Salmiya during the end of June and would be happy to pass it along and sell my furniture to someone who's interested. I pay 220 KD/month (water and electricity included) for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom place in a building with mostly families (Egyptian, Lebanese). Most people in the neighborhood speak Arabic only so it'd be a good way to practice/learn the language. I live near City Center and Restaurant Street, not on a main road. Good views. Let me know if you're interested.

Kuwait: mahjong, anyone?:

In Kuwait since Sept. and enjoying it except for the socializing- I'd love to meet people (Kuwaitis and expats) interested in hanging out and exploring the city, bicycling, movies (yes, one of the two that are playing at every cinema!), etc. Or, if someone is looking for an exchange, I can collaborate on creative projects, provide good conversation, informally teach English... And you could teach me something- Arabic or another language, how to repair cars, how to cook, etc. I'm up for anything. Drop me a line.
