Belize: Best place for family with kids?:
Hands down, with your family and small children, I vote Placencia or very close to this village. Not a party place like Ambergris, lower keyed, and per friends with children, pretty good schools, and private schools too.
my experience visiting different areas of Belize found some seriously great places to live, but overall. Lifestyle, safety, availability of stuff I need, cost of living, etc. made my choice Placencia area. Ambergris is nice, but you are on an island, and everything is expensive because of it. Great for " spring breakers", or those who come to belize for it's great diving, but there's great diving off Placencia too.
Good luck.
Belize: Thoughts:
Good choice in my opinion. I visited all major areas of Belize over 6 years, and bought land/built home ijust outside the village of Placencia. Love the small village feeling, people, services and awesome restaurants.
Best beaches in Belize.
If it's for you, do it ??
But I highly suggest tenting a house in an area you are interested, in town, near " sidewalk", in Maya Beach, wherever for a few weeks and try living like an Expat before making decision.
Belize: Hopkins:
We have been coming to Belize for six years now, usually 2-3 times a year, a month at a time. We moved here full time this year.
I highly suggest if you are serious, and especially if looking to move with children, that you at least come down and stay in a rental in Hopkins before moving the family all the way here.
Stay for at least 2-3 weeks (or more), don't stay in a "resort",with false security feeling but in rental house/cabana and live the real life.
If its for you and your family, you will probably know right away.
The fact is, nobody else can tell you if Hopkins, or anywhere else in Belize is for you. You need to experience it in person.
And yes, we spent time in Hopkins, Ambergris and Placencia before making our decision.
Good luck
Belize: How do I find real estate sales prices in Belize?:
I highly suggest just coming down to Placencia/Hopkins area for at least 2-3 weeks, the first time, and experiencing it. Get a vehicle and explore, meet people. If you really want to see what it's like living here, go on VRBO or HomeAway, find a house for rent in the area, and live in it, shop for food, an experience in itself, and cook your own meals. Drive the roads. Get a good feeling for what it's like living here. You won't by staying in a resort eating in restaurants. Belize isn't for everyone, but seems to be when your on vacation. Don't make it a vacation, make it a " realization tour".
If it still feels good when you get back home, do it again and maybe again before making a decision.
This is what my wife and i did for 4 years before making decision to move and retire in P,acencia. We visited the whole country, and decided on the Placencia community.
And, I highly suggest visiting with David Kafka the broker at 1St Choice Remax. The realtor you choose is the 2nd most I portant decision you will make.
Good luck, and PM me for any questions.
Belize: Looking for property:
I also highly recommend Remax 1st Choice in Placencia, David Kafka Brokerage. I personally used Donna Gartner as my agent there. Very honest and knowledgeable. Difficult to find elsewhere, just saying.
Belize: Mennonite Built Homes:
Just ordered a 20x20 cabana from then to put on our beachfront lot on Placencia Penninsula.
They have been great working with us, and doing upgrades that we requested. This will be used by us while our custom home us built.
Remember, you get what you pay for,, and the choices are up to you.
One thing they don't tell you is its up to you to get the CBA approval to place on your property, before its delivered.
And don't forget " hurricane straps" ??
Belize: Canadain wanting to do a QRP and getting Scotia Bank Account:
I just opened a bank account including " on-line" banking from my U.S. Bank direct, with Atlantic Bank. No problems, took less than a month. Opened from the U.S.
QRP requires at least $2K a month being deposited in Belize Bank per month.
I used phone, Skype and U.S. Mail for documents.
Also no problem, just registered mail.
Belize: Retirement:
I highly suggest researching different areas of Belize, and locate a couple that fit your desires for retirement. Ambergris Caye is touristy most of the year, but has a good number of expats there. Corozal up north is popular for those wanting to be close to the Mexican boarder and shopping like at SAMs Club.
We choose to build and retire in the south mainland in the Placencia area. It's a smaller village feeling, safe, awesome beaches, restaurants, etc. this area, including the Hopkins area just north is gaining popularity.
My wife and I chose after much research to work with Remax 1st Choice in Placencia, specifically, Donna Gartner. As a Real Estate Broker myself I was looking for honesty, integrity, good contact/customer service, and found all these with this office.
We ended up buying a beautiful ocean front building lot and are in process of building our new home.
It took us 3 years of visiting, renting and researching before making this decision.
Beware of investing in " large world class communities" in Belize, as we made that mistake along the way, luckily not investing our retirement monies, but did loose some.
Research, research, more search, and spend time there before making decisions.
It's a beautiful country.
Good luck

Belize: Placencia furnature maker:
Can anyone recommend a custom Belizean wood, furnature maker. ? Looking for a creative custom bedroom set. On the Placencia peninsula if possible.
Belize: Kanantik:
Sanctuary and Kanantik are two entirely separate resorts owned by two different investment groups.nthey will Not " merge".
They have common marketing groups,
As an owner at Sanctuary, I would highly suggest doing your due diligence before signing up and visiting these places on a tour.
Completion of both communities will take many years.
