Bahamas: day care versus nanny:

Congratulations on the job and your move to Nassau!!! As a parent, I know the stress of finding daycare for a child. I was very fortunate to find a very loving woman to care for my 3 month old son as I had to return to a very busy dental practice. Having said that, I decided to schedule more play-groups when I noticed after 2 years or so that my son needed more social engagement. Eventually by 3 and half he began preschool. He is now 12 and still very fond of his former caretaker and we still consider her family. I recently sourced a daycare for a colleague of mine that has a two year old. I was delighted to find TLC Daycare and just realized that a lovely woman that attends our church actually works there!e link is listed below. Bahamas: Health Care For Parents?:

Congratulations on your opportunity at UB. Regarding senior care, you may want to consider hiring a PT or FT care giver. I have considered doing the same for my elderly mom who is still in Charlotte, NC but considering a move to be with me in Nassau. I relocated in November. I found a reputable site that has resources for care; http://www.greataupair.com/Senior_Caregiver_Service/Find_Senior_Caregiver/The+Bahamas.htm As for insurance, most US companies won't cover services in the Bahamas. There are many companies that provide coverage. I personally like Atlantic Medical. You may want to consider who the UB provider will be for your insurance and go from there. When looking for housing consider a 3-4 bedroom in the event that a caretaker lives in with you and your parents. Good luck with your interview!!!

Bahamas: Youth sports leagues, social and security:

Hello and hope all is well and good as you prepare to relocate to Nassau. We are relocating to Nassau in September as well. I have an 11 year old son that is very involved in athletics here in Charlotte, NC and I have had similar concerns regarding our transition back. I have lived and worked in Nassau for 10 years previously, and know that there are a number of different soccer leagues for your children to participate in. There are several leagues that practice and play out West and a few others that are located on the Eastern side of the island. There is a FB page for the Bahamas Soccer Academy and I believe they are located out West at the Tambearly school; https://www.facebook.com/BAHAMAS-SOCCER-ACADEMY-314527566626/ The Western Warriors Soccer Club is one that I will look at for my son. I noticed a lot of diversity on the teams pictured and several of the families that my son once played T-ball with are still together and now playing soccer. You may also want to check out the Bahamas Football Association, which appears to be a more competitive league with players that have qualified for the World Cup in 2013; http://bahamasfa.com/ As far as adult soccer, I am not certain. There is an adult flag football league that plays out East on Sundays. In general, safety requires being aware and mindful of your surroundings. Please email directly if you have any other questions or if you just want to connect as expat families making a similar transition. scogen312@gmail.com All the best!

Bahamas: GARBAGE:

This continues to be a huge and ongoing issue. At least 7 years ago I participated with my 3 year old in a massive beach cleanup effort hosted and sponsored by NPCC (New Providence Community Church). Large (20 ft x 5 ft) trash receptacles were brought out to the beach where numerous bags of trash and several refrigerators were removed from the beach. After the cleanup was completed we stayed to enjoy a proper beach barbecue and we were sure to remove all of our trash! Fast forward to 2015 and the Coral Habour beach continues to be an eyesore, especially after long holiday weekends. My other half who is Bahamian, contacted the radio station to complain. He was invited to come in and voice his concerns on air. You should be able to get direction on who to contact to create a sign and voice your concerns by contacting Darold Miller (proactive radio personality) @ 325-5405. He will probably know of other keep the environment clean initiatives.

Bahamas: FRESH FISH:

I have always had luck at the Montague Boat Ramp which located out east. Go early to avoid the afternoon traffic. The fish is usually caught that same morning and very fresh. Beautiful Red Snapper, Grouper and Hog Fish! There are several vendors that will negotiate a good price for you and even fillet the fish on the spot and package it up to transport home for freezing or cooking. Take a friend or spouse along for the trip to the dock. The energy at the dock can be intense as everyone wants your business. Don't be afraid to negotiate. Great if you can find a vendor and become a regular. You can even ask for their cell number and let them know what you need in advance. Buying fresh fish at the dock is an authentically Bahamian experience. Just short of fishing it up yourself!

Bahamas: Job Listings:

Hello All, I am an expat returning to Nassau after having lived there for 10 years. I am married to a Bahamian so I have permanent residency. I am looking for Education Management / Communications/ PR related work opportunities. Is there a data base with listings or job openings??? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Bahamas: website for buying household goods?:

I arrived in Nassau about four weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised at the very reasonable prices at AID. I shopped at the location near the Marathon Mall heading away from the mall and toward Village Rd. and Wulff Rd. Glassware, dishes, kitchen and bathroom amenities galore. On par with stateside shopping similar to Walmart. Decent selections with decent pricing.
