Algeria: Life in Algeria:

Hi Azeemah, it's been a while that I have left Algeria and while it is a decent place to be in when one is young and single, it is not as exciting a place if you are considering to stay there for your life or even a significantly long time. Simply becoz there isn't much of a social life, the society is pretty closed and law and order very sad. Safety and security is also a concern, specially for white people. I am unsure from your name if u have an Islamic background, but if you do, that culture shock will be relatively less for you. However, the living standards of USA are better forgotten. Working for women is not absolutely ruled out and will depend on your professional credentials. But life after dark does not really exist and most men don't encourage their wives working. So before u marry, please be sure of all those things from your to be. Also, my final recommendation, while Algeria isn't unlivable, if there is a possibility of your bringing your husband to USA, i would always say its a better idea. Good luck anyway! U can email me at dasamitabha@yahoo.com if u wish to know anything more. DAS

Algeria: Moving to Annaba:

Hi Tarun, I dont know of any Annaba forum. However in my good old days I had opened a community for Indians in Algeria and the community name was 'Jaane Tu Club'... if you have an Orkut profile, u can join that community and find some people who are staying in Annaba. Good Luck.

Algeria: moving to algeria:

Dear Arabica... relax and trust me that you wil be treated very well in Algeria. Indians are very respected in Algeria and most Algerians admire the Indian culture due to their huge exposure to Bollywood films for a good 2-3 decades during the 70s-90s. Being a Pakistani, You would have similar image and since Pakistanis are Muslims and thus brothers for a religiously sensitive country, you will enjoy the benefits even more. I have been treated like a real good friend in Algeria as they like 'HINDIS'..If I was a Muslim, they would treat me even better, if that is possible.... And anyway, Pakistan right now is so dangerous to live in, you are 100% much better off staying in Algeria. Oran is a lovely city and women from Oran are very beautiful... My wishes with you.. Amitabh

Algeria: 2008 possible return to Algeria:

I feel sad after hearing your story. Algeria has changed a lot lately, but yes, from a European viewpoint it has a long way to go, which it will never go due to certain fundamental differences. I am strongly in favour of Algeria maintaining their own culture and not apeing the west, but having said that they surely do need to get to civilized limits and really fast for their own benefits. But please also understand that they are a race who have been exploited badly for ages, and inhumanly by the white world for centuries... its only understandable that they still hold a grudge towards their opressors for so long. I am sure it will weane away as they realize tha the generations have changed and so has the mentality. All non Algerians also need to interact well with them to help eardicate these old scars and the world will be a nice place to live. Natalie knows Algeria very well and she knows Europe pretty well too. She is a good friend of mine as well and I am sure you can interact with her and you'll love to have her as a friend. Good luck to you. Amitabha

Singapore: New to Singapore - Trying to make friends:

Hi to all the ladies and the rare men...I am a 34 yr old Indian guy working here in Singapore since a month or so. After the initial struggle with finding a house etc., only this morning I have finalized a house for myself and believe me, its not the best among what I have seen, but due to high rentals its at the end of my budgeted range. Singapore in general is a nice place and I am sure you guys will like it, if u dont already. I have seen a bit of the city already and if anyone needs any info or wants to be in touch, can email me at dasamitabha@yahoo.com I would love to answer anyone if I know the answer myself... Have fun in Singapore... DAS

Algeria: Positive Experiences in Algeria:

Hi there, your message in this forum is among the most level headed messages I have seen. You have spoken very sincerely, without hurting your own people but passing the message across that life is there beyond what one is used to. I am a 33 yr single guy who has been in Algeria for a while and had liked most of it. Ofcourse there have been things which I didnt like, but then during my 3 yr stay in France, I had more things which I disliked and my brief stint in UK conditions are pretty similar. My long stay in India (my home country) has also seen many a things which were worth disliking and so it happens everywhere. One just has to accept some and keep the mind open to be a part of new things. The rest come automatically. I wish more people feel like u and I am sure the world will be a happier place. Its a pity that I am no more in Algeria, but I will stay in Ghana from this July and anyone stepping there is always welcome at my place. Cheers !

Algeria: Seeking views on living in Algeria....:

Hi Jennifer, I agree to some of what Jay said although there are some others which I have experienced differently. People are definitely friendly here although they are religious and orthodox but so far I have met most of the nice ones and as long as you stay in decent zones, its pretty calm here. I have been here for 4 months now and due to my stay in French Africa for a while, I do speak some French, but being an Indian, you can rest assured about the level. However, contrary to what Jay said, I never found too many people speaking English, in fact in small shops and all, I find many who dont even speak French. Common people in Algeria would have about 60% speaking French, but in Office circles its almost as high as 90% with a 25% office going community also having some knowledge of English. Work wise, I really cannot comment, but I feel getting an English teacher's job is not gonna be tough. But whether they look for a bilingual profile is something I am not sure of. Jay is also pretty correct about entertainment as it rarely exists and if it does, is pretty tainted. Unfortunately, I have not been in touch with the expat community much and would actually love to be a part of it. If you want to know anything more, drop in a message.
