Uruguay: Touchdown:
I would reco the Regency Rambla Design Apart Hotel in Carrasco. It is river front, very clean, has parking, walking distance to the casino and good restaurants. We were there off season and the rates were very reasonable. It is most definitely a taxi drive to downtown for sure but in a very nice location.
Uruguay: weird water in Punta del Este?:
Most water pipes installed in the world over the last 60 years are made of cast iron or steel, only in the last 20 years being installed now in plastic. Every single metal water pipe in the world also contains rust. I realize that most folks think the inside of these pipes are somehow clean and coated but they are not. With the use of Chlorine this scale is virtually harmless and unavoidable in the real world. It will remain on the pipe walls until something jars it off... usually additional taps being installed, hydrants being serviced or sometimes just the use of a hydrant causing high flows where there were none, can dislodge it and send rust particles and discolorization into the stream. Basically, just wait it out until it clears(hope you weren't doing any light colored laundry) and things will be fine again in a few days.
If this stuff creeps you out then go no further. Otherwise google "water main scale" and you should be able to see some pictures of what is actually down there and out of sight! Just remember, how good a drink of cool water from a babbling brook can be.......... even after it ran across all of those nasty rocks! And I am not even selling water filters!
Uruguay: Heating Systems:
When I was in UY a few months ago I saw a plethora of what I thought were mini split HVAC units virtually everywhere. Are these not heat pump units? I suppose if they are only AC units then the heating needs still apply but it would seem as though heat pumps would be optimal for the the temperatures involved during UY winters. Heat pumps perform most efficiently at temps above 40F.
Uruguay: CASH TRANSACTIONS:
Wunder,
I completely agree with you and Crazy concerning the impending international banking crisis. Most folks base their paradigm off of what they have experienced in their own lifetimes and will refuse to accept the possibility that other outcomes can exist due to simple fear. By attacking theories which do not fall within their belief system they attempt to reinforce their own denials of what could be.
The signs are everywhere...
Never before in the history of banking has there been the introduction of negative interest rates. .......Bank bail ins have been recently written into US law for anyone who cares to look. These bail ins were constructed and written into Barney Frank's bill for a very specific reason (the legal language did not just metastasize and insert itself). .......Does any thinking person really believe that Obama floated, as a trial balloon, the "myRA" program last year as an honest means of attracting competent investor attention? ..... Do you really think the timing of the negative interest rate imposition is coincidental with the new US federal banking cash withdraw restrictions?
I know lots of good people who choose not to even entertain the possibility that what is mathematically "in the works" for the world, could possibly occur...... just because it never has. ... Lots of people believe that the next crisis will be just like 2008. They forget the day on Wall Street when money market deposits were worth less than face value. This time around the Fed has no ammunition left and cannot step in and put the fire out.
All you can do is throw out the information and warnings to them. If they choose to ignore it then so be it.
I choose to structure my finances and outlook on the financial world in a defensive posture just as insurance. I go about my life as if I knew nothing of whats coming. I suppose being branded as a "conspiracy nut" is worth it in the long run since I choose not to be in a bread line with my hand held out waiting for the charity of any government to take care of me...(or not).
Uruguay: Walking in Montevideo:
Touche CrazyFarmer!
Many people are afraid to face reality when it will change their paradigm and what they WANT to believe. As you said, these "conspiracy theories" are finally causing light to be shed on the few, all thanks to the freedom of the internet which has enabled the average Joe Six Pack to end run the scripted media outlets. Those who ignorantly criticize knowledge most likely still believe that Oswald had it in for Kennedy!
Maybe spend some time and watch this with a keen eye for historic fact and an open mind and they may just become enlightened to the ways of the world!

On a separate note, I(and my two jars of Dulce de Leche) just returned from my trip to Uruguay and was very impressed with the country and it's people and look forward to returning in the very near future! Nearly all of the positive columns were checked, which says a lot for any country, no matter the continent.
Uruguay: Expat/Local Meetup:
Hello Board Members,
My brother and I will be travelling to Uruguay during the week of 8/24-9/1. We intend on flying into Montevideo, spending a few days there and then meandering up the coast, hoping to see most of the major beach towns. We would love to meet up with any board members to have a chance to discuss life in Uruguay. If there are any groups out there that get together for dinner we would love to attend if OK with everyone. We are fairly loose with plans right now and could most likely fit any place or time into our schedule as I would highly value the opportunity. Looking forward to the possibility and thanks again to all of the contributors as I have found everyone here to be most interesting and informative.
Regards,
Ken
