Argentina: Rent amounts in Buenos Aires:

Hi Dalepues, Please don't get discouraged, it is wonderful here & people here are very warm & sincere. It's not easy, everything is in Spanish and is different--for example, the ground floor is PB, then the next floor (piso) is 1 (which we would consider 2). When you see ads, be careful--they have a lot of rental apartments that are fully furnished with dishes, towels, etc even maid service, and these may be listed by the daily, weekly or monthly price. If the ad says Alquiler--for rent, Venta--for sale. If they list the rooms, they are counting the living room, so if it says 1 room, it's a studio, 2 rooms is a 1 bedroom. The most popular areas for tourists is Recoleta & Palermo, so they will be more expensive but still less than a hotel & you can save money by cooking some meals at home. I have heard it's not too safe in San Thelmo. Here are a few places to look--a lot of agents don't call back, and don't speak English. If you know someone who speaks Spanish it really helps. monappartementabuenosaires.com zonaprop.com.ar enbuenosaires.com/apartments You might consider just renting it for a couple of weeks to see if you like it--sometimes it looks exactly like the pictures, but is very noisy or has a bad view, etc. Then extend if you like it. Also, if you put it on a credit card, it will be charged on the USD. When you get here & exchange your USD for Pesos, see if you can pay in Pesos & you'll get a better deal because the exchange rate is good right now 14:1. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Argentina: Help:

Hi Shumirai, It's a really tough question because it depends on your standard of living--you may not need a car here either, the public transportation is very good & cheap & there are a lot of taxis. There's a website "numbeo"--where you can plug in your city & where you want to live & it will show you the cost of living, and many other comparisons. It might help you get an idea--

Argentina: Questions--Moving there in 1 week:

We are coming to Buenos Aires from the US in a week via Panama--we read that you need proof of onward travel--is this something you have to show at the airport before they let you into the country, or can we buy a ferry ticket to Uruguay when we are already there? We have already sold our home & gotten rid of almost everything. Between our clothes, personal possessions & cooking tools (I'm a chef), we have 2 rollalongs, 2 suitcases & 4 duffle bags--would it be crazy to come with that many bags--the cost would be $320 baggage fees from Hawaii to Panama, and again $320 from Panama to Argentina--we couldn't find any other way to get them there and I don't know how difficult it would be to replace everything. Do they have a Mail Boxes etc. there where we could receive packages? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Panama: Is Panama really that bad?:

We were very interested in Medellin also, until we read that they have bad air pollution there--did you find it so?

Panama: Storage Rental in Panama City:

Hi--we are moving there & would like to know if anyone knows of a storage rental place in the city, I haven't been able to find anything online. We would like to be able to send boxes ahead of our arrival. Thank you for any info.

Panama: Verizon iphone in PTY:

I was told by Verizon if I upgrade my iPhone, it will work in Panama (I really hesitate to spend the money & go into a 2 year contract again) Does anyone know if this is true?

Panama: Last minute packing:

Thanks--that's good to know & I would never have asked!

Panama: Foodies, Asian Groceries?:

We are coming to Panama--I am a Le Cordon Bleu Chef, I'm also Chinese. After reading the posts, I've decided to bring my knives, pans, small appliances, spices, baking pans--read they are hard to find there. We are bringing everything with us on the flight over--so must be very selective. I've lived in very "foodie" cities--Hong Kong, San Francisco, Honolulu. We recently lived in West Palm Beach, Florida & was very disappointed with the food scene--restaurants not very good & people only want to eat hamburgers & tacos. How would you folks rank Panama as far as food & the restaurants? Will I be able to get Asian ingredients--hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, oyster sauce, etc--are there any Asian Grocery stores there? Thank you so much for any info.

Panama: Mail, One-way ticket:

I've read on the forum that there is no regular postal delivery like in the US--If you get a postal service there, can you order (like from Amazon) & have it sent there? Is there a problem if you buy a one-way ticket to Panama, either on this side or when you get there? Are airfares cheaper when you buy them there--say from Panama to Argentina? Thank you for any comments.
